Oscar or Emmy, Tony or Grammy winners are hundreds, if not thousands. But those who, during their career, managed to get all four types of cherished figurines, are much less - a couple of dozen. To join a narrow circle of the elite, EGOT, is a serious achievement, and only belonging to the number of PEGOT laureates can be compared with it.
Who is among the elite: EGOT laureates
Interestingly, the "inventor" of this title has never been nominated for an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar or Tony. The idea came from actor Philip Michael Thomas, familiar to the audience for his role in the popular TV series Miami Police, where he played in tandem with Don Johnson. Thomas declared it his goal to receive all four major American awards that he could win as an artist, and even wore a gold medallion with these four letters. Alas, while the actor remains at the start, never being nominated for any of these awards, but the term he invented gave life to a whole "EGOT club".
An Emmy is an award for achievement in the American television industry, a Grammy is awarded to the best projects in music, an Oscar is the most honorable award for film workers, and Tony is for those who are busy with the theater. The EGOT winners began to be especially singled out in the last decade, when one of the heroines of the popular sitcom "Studio 30" voiced such a goal for herself.
It turned out that by the time the title appeared, quite a few artists could already boast of this achievement. All in all, at the moment, sixteen people are holders of all four awards, one of them even became the owner of the "double set" EGOT, this is the author of songs and musicals Robert Lopez, who also turned out to be the youngest of the sixteen and the fastest to receive this title.
And the very first of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards was composer Richard Rogers, the final award in this set was the Emmy, won in 1962. In total, Rogers won thirteen awards, and the first was the 1945 Oscar for Best Song for the Film Fair. Among women, the first four awards were actress Helen Hayes, winner of the Oscar for her supporting role in the film Airport. It took 45 years between receiving the first award and the Grammy, which completed the kit.
Audrey Hepburn received Emmy and Grammy awards posthumously, in 1993 and 1994, these awards made her the fifth EGOT winner. And John Legend became the first black EGOT winner. Grammy - Eleven Figurines The first African American to enter the EGOT Club is Whoopi Goldberg, an Academy Award winner for her supporting role in the 1991 film Ghost. True, conditional membership in this club is sometimes counted only in the presence of one of the types of "Emmy", the other is recognized as less prestigious.
Whose EGOT set is valued more
The Television Industry Emmy Awards come in one of two variations - Primetime Emmy and Daytime Emmy. Since it is much more difficult to get recognition for a show in prime time, the former is often recognized as a component of EGOT. Whoopi Goldberg, like Robert Lopez, for example, received their "daytime Emmy", thus taking a somewhat controversial place on the Olympus of American show business.
The same with the distinction between competitive prizes and special, honorable ones. Among the sixteen EGOT laureates are those artists who have won four types of awards in competitive nominations. Five more were awarded one of the prizes in a special nomination "for special reasons" - and let it only be up to the reader's conscience to decide whether they are worthy or not.
For example, Barbra Streisand, winner of the Tony's Star of the Decade Award. The actress also received 10 Grammy awards in her career, and in 1968 she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress in the film Funny Girl. And Liza Minnelli was awarded a Grammy in 1990 for her contribution to the development of the music industry …
This company can also include the "voice" of Darth Vader in the Star Wars film series - James Earl Jones, who won an honorary Oscar in 2011, as well as actor Harry Belafonte and composer Quincy Jones. four types of EGOT figurines, already in competitive nominations, were actress Rita Moreno, actor John Gielgud, composers Marvin Hamlish, Jonathan Tunick, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Alan Menken, directors Mel Brooks and Mike Nichols, producer Scott Rudin, playwright Tim Rice.
Where to go? PEGOT laureates
It turned out, however, that you can go even higher, and now, in addition to EGOT, PEGOT appeared, however, there are some discrepancies in the decoding of the letter "P". According to one view, we are talking about those EGOT laureates who also received the Peabody Prize. This award has been presented since 1941 for achievements in the field of radio and television to journalists and creators of various kinds of programs - educational, entertainment and others.
This list includes Barbra Streisand, Mike Nichols and Rita Moreno. Another variation of the fifth award in the set offers the Pulitzer Prize, which recognizes merit in the fields of literature, journalism, theater and music. In this case, the PEGOT winners include Richard Rogers and Marvin Hamlish. And to complete the picture, we cannot fail to mention the only Anti-EGOT laureate, Lynn Redgrave, the younger sister of Vanessa Redgrave, who has been nominated for each of the four awards, but throughout her life has not been awarded any of them.
And here, by the way, the most anticipated films of 2021, which will be unforgivable to miss.
