The work on the selection of films that can qualify for the most prestigious American film award "Oscar" has been going on for almost a whole year. They are subject to special requirements, according to which the premiere of the film, its distribution and filling in special forms are regulated. And sometimes it happens that a film is removed from the nomination for one reason or another. What films and for what were they deprived of the right to receive the prestigious award?

Circus, 1928, directed by Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin's originally silent black-and-white film was presented in four nominations at once. The film could have won awards for Best Comedy Direction, Best Actor, Best Literary Source, and overall Best Film. However, the film academics removed the film from all nominations, and the actor and director himself was awarded only an "Honorary Oscar". At the same time, the wording for the award was rather strange, it contained a mention of a universal and ingenious acting, script, directing and producing. There is an opinion that the "Circus" was removed from the main nominations of the "Oscars" only because it could really be the best in all nominations.

The film, which was nominated for the award for best literary source, as it turned out later, was included in the list of contenders by mistake. However, Edward Burns and Elwood Ullman, who were presented as nominees, had nothing to do with Charles Walters' film at all, but acted as playwrights in the film of the same name. He came out earlier and was not eligible for the 1956 Oscar.

Young Americans, 1967, directed by Alexander Grasshoff

Alexandre Grasse's film won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Documentary. The award was presented, but it was soon asked to return it. It turned out that the rules of the award were violated in terms of the time of the film's release on screens. Its screening began in 1967, while the prize was awarded in 1968, which means that the film "Young Americans" could no longer claim it.

The Godfather, 1972, directed by Francis Ford Coppola

In 1973, Francis Coppola's film received awards in three nominations at once (nominated for 11). However, he could well claim victory in the fourth nomination for the best music written by Nino Rota. However, it turned out that fragments of the musical accompaniment had already sounded in the comedy film Fortunella. According to the rules of the Oscar awards, only those films, the music of which had never been used anywhere else, could apply for the award for the best music.

During the presentation of the film awards, Marlon Brando, the performer of the role of Don Vito Corleone, did not appear at the ceremony. Instead, a girl in an Indian costume took the stage, who called herself Sasha's Light Feather. She read out a letter from the actor, who turned down the Oscars in protest against the bias in the American film industry towards the indigenous people - the Indians.

The historical film is based on real events that unfolded in Ohio in the 18th century. The picture tells about the miraculous salvation of Barbara and Regina Leininger thanks to the Christian faith. The title song for the film "Alone Yet Not Alone" was written by Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel, who were nominated for the Best Film Song. However, the excessive activity of one of the authors, Bruce Broughton, led to the fact that the picture was disqualified.

As it turned out, Broughton tried to enlist the support of members of the music department of the film academy, sending them letters and personally asking them to vote for him. Unfortunately, the award was not presented, although it could have become a real inspiring example for many people. The fact is that the song was performed by Joni Erikson Tada, whose only half of her lungs were working normally and her arms and legs were paralyzed.

The film of the Armenian director was nominated for the prestigious award for 2016 as the best film in a foreign language. The reason for the disqualification was the composition of the creative group, which included the majority of representatives of Russian cinema. For American film academics, this was the reason to remove the film from the nomination.

The Woe Creator, 2017, directed by James Franco

The director and actor of the film was considered the favorite of the upcoming awards ceremony. However, his film by film academics was actually withdrawn from the competition. The reason for this was the accusation of violence brought against James Franco by several actresses at once. The director categorically denied his guilt, but he was still not given an Oscar.

During the Oscar awards ceremony, curiosities often occur that are remembered by the audience more than the names of the victors. The main curiosity of the Oscar-2019 was the fall from the stage of Rami Malek, who won the Best Actor award for his role as Freddie Mercury in the film Bohemian Rhapsody. However, this annoying incident is not the biggest curiosity in the history of the Oscar.
