The amazingly talented translator Maria Spivak had her own view of books in general and the works of J. K. Rowling in particular. Her acquaintance with the magic boy first grew into a passion for translating books about Garrry Potter, and then became her profession. First victories
Maria Spivak's acquaintance with J. K. Rowling's tale of Harry Potter took place in 2000. She immediately translated the first book, and her husband was happy to share the result of her work on the Internet. Maria Spivak's work was special. Realizing that the names of the characters in the original are speaking, she tried to follow this rule in her translation, adapting the names and surnames for the Russian-speaking reader. So Hagrid, in the adaptation of Maria Spivak, became Hagrid, and Severus Snape received the name of Villainous Snape, Madame Hooch became Madame Moonshine.
Maria Viktorovna worked very quickly, her translations appeared immediately after the publication of the next book about the magic boy. A kind of competition between amateur translators has even begun on the Internet. She put her own subjective perception of J. K. Rowling's works into her translations. However, at that time, Russian-language versions of the Potteriana appeared in large numbers, and each of them did not exclude the existence of other versions.
Since the right to publish books about the magic boy belonged to Rosman, there was also a completely official translation performed by Igor Oransky. The names of the heroes coincided with those that sounded in the film adaptation, and readers and viewers no longer imagined what could be different.
Maria Spivak already had her own army of admirers and critics who could, in the correct form, express dissatisfaction with the translator's subjective view of the work or point out the existing shortcomings.

In 2002, all alternative translations began to be removed from the network, allegedly at the request of J. K. Rowling's lawyers. This was explained by the author's dissatisfaction with the presence of translations not regulated by contractual relations.
After the release of the fifth book about Harry Potter, Maria Spivak began to sign her translations not with her real name, but with the pseudonym Em. Tasamaya.
Thunder struck in 2014, when the publishing house "Makhaon", which received the right to publish the books of J. K. Rowling after "Rosman", published books about Harry Potter, translated by Maria Spivak. At the same time, the translation practically remained the same, which once hit the Internet for the first time. Slightly changed at the request of the publisher, only minor details.
From adoration to hate
The wizard boy's fans were indignant. In the new edition, everything was unusual: names, descriptions of heroes, interpretation of some events. Many readers were simply outraged, and especially zealous ones did not skimp on insults and even threats against Maria Spivak.
Complaints were made about any inconsistencies with the official translation, to which everyone has long been accustomed. Love for Harry Potter turned into some kind of cult, and any changes and author's details caused real anger of supporters of the first official translation.
In 2016, a new round of reader anger followed: the translation of the script for the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" was again entrusted to Mary, without taking into account the petition registered on the network against her participation in the work on the script. More than 70 thousand users have subscribed to the request to transfer the script to another translator. Threats poured in again, detailing the methods of her alleged murder.
The accusations of unprofessionalism were completely unfounded: she translated books into Russian for very serious publishing houses, she was twice nominated for awards for her literary translations, published several of her books, including English ones.
Maria was a very tender and vulnerable nature, and therefore never shared with the public the details of her personal life, allowing readers to conjecture their story after reading the books. And when she got seriously ill, she chose not to bring this fact to the public.
On July 20, 2018, Maria Spivak passed away. Cancer of the brain claimed the life of a talented writer and a good person. After her departure, many of Maria's friends suggested that the cause of the disease could be the very bullying that she was experiencing so hard.
