She was afraid to become an artist - otherwise it would have been impossible to avoid comparisons with the brilliant father. She was Lagerfeld's muse, inspired Yves Saint Laurent, starred in scandalous films and appeared on the covers of magazines … But most importantly, she devoted forty years to work at Tiffany & Co, becoming a living legend of jewelry design. Palome Picasso was not destined to become the mediocre daughter of a brilliant father - in the jewelry world, her fame and influence are undeniable.

Paloma is Picasso's daughter from the writer Françoise Gilot, but her parents broke up when the girl was only four years old. She remembered their relationship as bright, joyful, full of spontaneity and boundless fantasy - despite the fact that the reality was not at all so rosy. Her father gave her this name - "dove" - as a sign of boundless love, because it was the most important image for him, a symbol of peace.

When little Paloma was asked who she wants to be when she grows up, she replied: "Myself." And this, apparently, became the leitmotif of her entire life. Not the daughter of a brilliant father, not the muse of Yves Saint Laurent, and not even one of the designers at Tiffany & Co. - Paloma Picasso, the one and only.

Paloma never planned to become a professional artist. Moreover, she was afraid of this fate. As a teenager, she touched a pencil only to take a couple of notes, fearing that the hand itself would draw a pigeon's wing or a distorted profile on the paper. After all, then everyone will start comparing her with her father - and obviously not in her favor! Paloma picked up oil paints only once - the first and the last. Watercolors were more to her taste, but her favorite material was not paper and paints, but stones and metals. A chance meeting pushed her to engage in jewelry. Sixteen-year-old Paloma met a writer who wore only one piece of jewelry - a simple bracelet. But, apparently, she never took it off, and the bracelet literally "rooted" into the woman's hand. Paloma was shocked. She realized that she wanted to create something that could awaken the same love in people, make jewelry that would be organic, like a part of the body. Then she made her first jewelry …

As a student, Paloma designed costumes and accessories for avant-garde theatrical productions. She found interesting items in flea markets, antique shops, anywhere - and got so carried away by the process that, in the end, she began to design jewelry professionally. And Paloma created her own image, looking for interesting things in the most unexpected places, altering it to her liking and collecting the most incredible combinations.

She was considered a true style icon. For Paloma, there were no boundaries - she could appear barefoot at a glamorous party, put on men's jackets on her naked body … She was the first in all of Paris to start wearing scarlet lipstick during the day - simply because she did not like how her face seemed to "dissolve" in Polaroid pictures, and Paloma loved to be photographed. When one of her friends introduced her to Yves Saint Laurent, he was delighted. Paloma's extravagant style inspired him to create a new collection - in addition, they began to collaborate. Their friendship and joint work continued until the death of the fashion designer. As well as her warm friendship with Karl Lagerfeld. For her sake, both masters left their differences - however, only once, when they danced flamenco at her wedding with playwright Rafael Lopez-Sanchez (Paloma created the scenery for his performances). Both couturiers created wedding gowns for her, and Paloma diplomatically tried on both - a white trouser suit for the ceremony, a daring scarlet dress for a banquet.

The seventies became tragic and beautiful for her at the same time. The father died, followed by difficult legal proceedings due to inheritance, depression, fatigue - and at the same time, it was time for creative experiments. Paloma Picasso starred in films, sometimes quite frank and scandalous, appeared on the pages of glossy magazines in the lens of Helmut Newton, even planned an acting career, but … still remained true to her vocation. We have already had cooperation with Parisian designers and some jewelry companies, and it’s time to storm new heights. Rather, an almost unattainable peak - Tiffany & Co.

Paloma did not get there the first time, but in 1980 she managed to conclude a contract and get a dream job. Prior to joining Tiffany & Co. Paloma worked with a Greek brand for which she designed gold jewelry - only gold. When she entered the Tiffany workshop, the first thing she saw was a table covered with colored gemstones. Paloma experienced a real childish delight - so much color, so much radiance! This is how her first collections for Tiffany appeared - the multicolored stones in a simple setting, this is how the creative style that made Paloma Picasso recognizable was formed. At the same time, Paloma created her own brand of accessories, came up with three fragrances and a lipstick shade for L'Oréal.

No matter how much critics would like to compare the work of Paloma Picasso with what her parents did, it is not easy to find explicit or hidden quotes. Even in her Dove collection, dedicated to the work of her famous father, Paloma managed to create an image of a dove that is not reminiscent of his work. Everything she does is biographical. For example, in one of the collections, she used the letter "X" along with hearts - a greeting from the past, when her friend wrote her a wish in a notebook, giving it several "Xs" and explaining that they meant friendly kisses. She also devotes her creations to her favorite cities - Morocco and Venice. Paloma Picasso's jewels are large, bright, emotional.

In addition to her wide creative activity, Paloma devoted a lot of efforts to preserving the creative heritage of her parents, especially her mother, whose literary work remained little known in Europe.
