As N. V. said Gogol, Russia has two problems, fools and roads. Everyone complains that all our roads are old and not repaired, but in America, apparently, the opposite is true. We learn about this from the design work of Pete Dungey.

Several years ago, a councilor for the city of Davis, California, protested the replacement of the pavement of some historically important lanes in her county, arguing that the new asphalt would destroy the old atmosphere. Her statement made a huge splash in the American media. As a result, she was called a crazy politician because she defends not the rights of people, but the holes in the roads. Be that as it may, Pete Dungey, a student at the University of Brighton, artist and graphic designer, fully supports the position of this politician. He found a "colorful" solution to the international problem of road holes - to grow tiny gardens in them. “If I plant plants in every hole, the roads will be like forests,” Pete said.

The road maintenance organization claims that painted intersections and colored signs slow down traffic, which makes roads not only prettier, but also safer. I wonder if this is why Pete Dungey decided to fill in the potholes with his pansy and primroses ikebans for this? Or maybe this is for the aesthetic development of drivers who already know perfectly well not only the rules of the road, but also the driving technique itself.

Dungey decided to fill the road holes with dirt and flowers, undoubtedly improving the appearance of gray, muddy roads. “I started my work with a project called Changing the Habitual. I wanted to create something that could not only attract attention on the road, but also enhance the aesthetic development of drivers. So this idea was born. I planted these mini-gardens for about two weeks and only now I see that this is a successful project."

While this is a designer's quirk, we have to take into account the other side of the coin - how to care for travel flowers. After all, even in order to repair roads, there are not always enough working hands, but what can we say about collecting water for irrigating small gardens? But Pete Dungey believes that this problem can also be solved. The chief designer has achieved: driving along the road and seeing flowers in the middle of the roadway, drivers always smile. Pete Dungey's works always remind tired drivers that outside the car there is a life filled with light and joy.

For now, Pete has been working alone, but hopes people will follow suit.

What was the Moscow Ring Road more than half a century ago: Doubtful records, theft of 10 cm of the road and other little-known facts

The predecessor of the Moscow Ring Road played one of the main roles in the December counteroffensive in 1941, and the road itself in the first period of its existence was an empty and calm country highway, which could easily be used both for filming a film and for family photos. Decades later, the words "Beware of the car" and "MKAD" correlated in a different way, and one of the dubious road records was the huge death rate among drivers and pedestrians
What do scientists know about the gardens of Semiramis: Did there ever exist someone who created them and other facts about one of the wonders of the world?

Which of the wonders of the ancient world are usually called on the fly, without preparation? It is unlikely that all seven, but in the first place on the list, most likely, will be the pyramid of Cheops, and in the second or third, certainly ahead of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Gardens of Semiramis will appear. And how can one forget this - a huge green mountain with terraces on which pear and pomegranate, grapes and figs grow, and all this is in the city in the middle of the desert! The history of these gardens, however, is vague: it is very likely that both they and themselves

Martin Luther King Jr. from 4200 Rubik's cubes. Installation Dream Big by Pete Fecteau

Inspiration, like the east, is a delicate matter. It is not clear where it comes from and where it leaves, but by catching it by the tail, you can move mountains. Well, or pyramids … So American artist and designer Pete Fecteau spent most of 2010 playing with Rubik's cubes and putting them together in a huge mosaic: a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Big: this is the name of this project
