When Texas resident Cara Barer saw the Yellow Pages directory soaked in the rain, she had a brilliant idea. She photographed its intricately curved pages and then switched to dictionaries, pocket paperbacks … In short, anything with pages can form the basis for her graceful and fantastic images.
Kara Barer's photographs consist solely of page ornaments, white or colored on a black background. Pages crumple, fold and curl, and the spines of books form the core. In each work, we see simultaneously the flexibility of the paper and its stiffness, softness and strength.
"I don't consider myself a photographer," says Kara, "but rather an artist who uses photography."
Kara Barer approaches the choice of books carefully, because in order to create the images she conceived, they must have a certain size, paper quality, page color, etc. The artist buys material for her work on sales, searches for them in abandoned houses and in her own library.
As mentioned, books are always photographed against a black background. “I want to captivate the viewer by showing the book out of context, and that gives people the opportunity to look at it as something completely different. If there is only one transformed object, on which all attention is concentrated, this object becomes something else, not what it was before."
One of the reasons that prompted the artist to take up this project is the uncertainty of the future of books: “I am afraid that the printed world will become rare, and the next generation will depend on an ephemeral digital word that exists only on computer monitors. I am not saying this is a bad idea - I just hope that the paper versions of books will continue to exist for those people who truly enjoy turning pages and touching a real book."
