As part of his latest photo project, "Just the Two of Us" (), photographer Klaus Pitchler visited the homes of Australian cosplayers (from the English - "costume game"), where he photographed the owners, dressed in elaborate costumes, in the atmosphere of their everyday life.
Here's what Pitchler himself writes about the project:
For centuries, carnivals and masquerades have been an integral part of many public celebrations. The costumes were widely used in theatrical performances, street performances and mass processions to provide people with an opportunity to escape from their daily routines, temporarily turn everything around on their head, and give an outlet for behavior that would be unthinkable in "real life."
Today, this tradition continues to evolve and transform, giving rise to new directions, such as cosplay, which originally appeared among Japanese anime and manga fans, and a variety of role-playing games. The project "Just the Two of Us" represents many of the subtypes of these directions, from lovers of historical reconstruction to fans of "Star Wars".
Scary or funny, the costumes in the photographs themselves deserve admiration, but it is the contrast between the ordinary home environment and the mystery that the masquerade brings that gives rise to such vivid and unusual images.
The choice of a mask is never random, it is based on a number of factors, among which may be an addiction to a certain historical period, a genre of literature, or self-identification with a specific character. The conscientiousness of this choice is confirmed by the huge amount of time that enthusiasts spend on creating their costumes. Each costume, one way or another, tells the story of its owner, and at home, where the heroes of Klaus peacefully go about their everyday affairs, this story sounds especially funny and entertaining.
