Su Zhou is a Chinese province with a mild subtropical climate, an incredible number of plant species grow here, including endemics of southeastern China. Since the Neolithic era, flowers, trees and birds have dominated local images and ornaments.
Embroidery is one of the most ancient crafts Su Zhou has developed special skills in the art of depicting plants.
Firstly, this is a strict correspondence of the direction of the thread to the growth of the stem or leaf; you will never find cross stitches here. This requires some knowledge of plant physiology and morphology.
Secondly, it is a special way of laying the threads. Rows of stitches are lined up on the canvas in such a way that light, falling on them, highlights some parts of the plant and darkens others. Whichever side you light up the work, some of the stems and leaves will be light and some will be dark. In the finished work, this manifests itself as a contrast of adjacent parts of the plant, which creates volume absolutely without the help of glare and shadows.
A special matter is the selection of threads, sometimes they are dyed specifically for a specific job. One thread is divided into 48 parts and different elements of the picture are embroidered with threads of varying degrees of thickness.
