Ari Krupnik is a programmer, but computers are not his only passion. The second hobby of the author is mosaic folding. In his work, which Ari calls "materializing abstract experiences," he uses a variety of materials, but some of the most interesting and unusual are the dice mosaics.
The first mosaic of this material, "Knee Deep", was created by Ari Krapnik in 2004 as a gift for his girlfriend. It is based on a photograph of this girl taken by Ari on the seashore. Then there were portraits of the writer George Orwell and the revolutionary Che Guevara. The author does not hide the fact that at the beginning of work on the next image, he resorts to the help of a computer program that simulates various versions of the mosaic for him. Well, if programming is his forte, then why not take advantage of this advantage when creating works of art?
In the process of work, Ari Krapnik conventionally divides the image into several parts and assembles them separately, and only then connects the finished elements into one mosaic. The author had to suffer in search of a suitable glue, but as a result of a series of experiments, Ari came to the conclusion that polyurethane is best suited for his purposes.
Each of the "Knee Deep" mosaics and the portrait of George Orwell consists of 1925 bones. Che Guevara is much smaller - "only" 400 elements, but they did not have to be fastened with glue: the bones just lie on the table. Ari Krapnik says that the finished images are very heavy.
Ari Krapnik lives in Silicon Valley (California, USA). You can see his other "pixel mosaics" of M & Ms pills, gun casings and other materials on the author's page on the Internet.
