The smooth, almost photographic surface of pencil drawings by American artist Laurie Lipton hides a very strange and confusing world. Inspired by the hyperrealistic painting of the 15th century Flemish and Dutch masters, she developed her own unique graphic technique, imitating the craftsmanship of such great artists as Hans Memling and Albrecht Durer. Thousands of clear, confident pencil strokes create a monochromatic, rich and luminous tone.

Laurie Lipton was born in New York and began painting at the age of 4. All she uses for her work is charcoal, pencil and paper. Sitting at a table and painting, you cannot find a happier person. This is her need. Most of all, her parents were proud of Laurie Lipton's picturesque works of art, considering their child a little genius. Although not everyone from her environment perceived the work of the aspiring artist positively. As a kind little angel, her paintings seemed cruel, ominous and "dark."

The artist says that the themes for her works come initially in words, not in images, but in words, in scraps of phrases, in sentences. Therefore, she always has a notebook with her, where she writes down the ideas that have arisen, which will subsequently find their visual expression on paper. Laurie then sketches the future drawing. Sometimes playing with a composition, which is built gradually from the main idea, takes weeks. For example, first a woman appears on paper, who is in the room, the artist carefully writes out the features of her face, then prompts appear about what her outfit should be, the outfit, in turn, already gives a hint about the interior of the room, and so gradually, step by step, according to chain and the drawing ends.

Not everyone likes Laurie Lipton's painting, and she knows about it. The dark theme does not always find a positive response from the audience. But the artist recently won a competition among 4,000 other drawings submitted by the Saatchi Gallery. She is convinced that her work cannot satisfy everyone, the main thing is that she does what she likes. “It's nice when you get positive reviews, but if people don't like it, they turn away and leave, that's their problem,” says Laurie Lipton, who portrays the absurdity and fleetingness of life on the canvas.
