When it comes to books, as a rule, we mean their internal content, but you can not only read them. Book art opens before us other aspects of the existence of books: their design, as well as the history of our reading of books, reflected in their state and appearance months and years later … This art has always been very intimate, exciting and even sinful, but despite the numerous protests and misunderstandings, artists continue to create. About one of these authors, a man named Robert The, our article today.
Robert The never aspired to take any place in art. He was always interested in languages and logic, so he planned to connect his life with mathematics or philosophy. But one day, according to the author, "something strange happened" - for a period of several months he lost the ability to read. During this time, Robert The rethought his understanding of life and found a new hobby - calligraphy. And then one day, having written a short word THIS, our hero decided to try to cut it out of the book. This type of activity was completely unfamiliar to him, and therefore Robert The spent about a year on training - fortunately, he found enough material in the garbage cans of Manhattan (by the way, the artist himself considers the fact of throwing away books "extremely painful"). Finally, after cutting out several THIS, the author took them to the SoHo gallery, and to everyone's surprise, his work was instantly sold out.
This small success was followed by a big success: pistols cut from books became immensely popular with collectors. So Robert The realized that from now on he and art are inextricably linked. At the same time, despite the wide popularity, the author calls himself “an outsider in the art world”.
Robert The was born in 1961 in the USA. He began to study book art in 1991. The author currently lives in Kingston, New York, and his work is in galleries across the country. You can see more of his works on the website.

Book carving. "Adaptations" by Brian Dettmer
As a child, we were all taught to treat books with care and respect: to wrap them in covers, to carefully turn the pages and in no case to draw in the margins and not to wrap the corners. And if the book is torn or frayed, it should be referred to a "doctor" who will "cure" the torn pages, glue the fallen leaves, or even completely replace the binding of the injured poor fellow. In the hands of Brian Dettmer (Brian Dettmer) books are given new life
