The Dutch resident Henk Hofstra is known for his passion for large-scale art projects. In May 2008, he turned one of Leeuwarden's squares into a huge frying pan, in which the inventive author decided to "fry" fried eggs of unprecedented sizes.
Within the framework of the Art Eggcident project, Henk Hofstra painted eight huge eggs with a diameter of up to 30 meters and a yolk diameter of 7.5 meters on the square. A few more smaller eggs are located in the corners of the square, unlike their "counterparts" have a voluminous yolk and serve as entertainment for local children. The total area of the "frying pan" is 14,000 square meters.
Henk Hofstra doesn't give much explanation about the meaning of his installation. It is assumed that there the author wanted to draw public attention to the problem of global warming. Henk, on the other hand, replies to everyone who considers his art to be frivolous and not worthy of attention: “This art is different from a painting on a wall or a sculptural image in bronze. This is a new look at art that can surprise us, make us angry or make us feel happy. This is art that evokes emotions and makes you smile. Is there anything to object to such words?
The Leeuwarden authorities were quite loyal to the installation, as a result of which it was decided to leave it in the town square for six months. However, the Dutch are no strangers to Henk Hofstra's eccentricities: a year earlier in Drachten, he painted a kilometer-long section of road blue, thus erecting monument the river that once flowed here.
