A hand-drawn map of Manhattan by Nobutaka Aozaki and hundreds of bystanders

Not all people on the planet have the opportunity to use GPS navigators. Someone is forced from time to time in the old fashioned way to ask passers-by how to get to the place he needs, and they are happy to draw a path on scraps of paper. Painter Nobutaka Aozaki walked around New York for a long time, pestering people with similar questions, in order to collect the resulting pieces of paper into a single hand drawn map of Manhattan… In the summer of 2012, on the eve of the London Olympics, there was a wonderful hand-drawn map of the city called London by hand, created by artist Jenni Sparks. American conceptual artist Nobutaka Aozaki did not try to repeat this work, transferring it to New York. He presented a plan for Manhattan, in the creation of which not professional illustrators participated, but several dozen ordinary passers-by.

Nobutaka Aozaki set out to create a map of Manhattan drawn by ordinary people by hand. To do this, for several months he pestered people with a request to explain to him, or even better, draw on paper how to get to this or that object.

Dressed like a typical tourist from East Asia, China or Japan, wearing a T-shirt and a cap with the words I LOVE HY, Nobutaka Aozaki traveled all over Manhattan, pestering random people and getting them to show their knowledge of the city, multiplied by cartographic and artistic talent.

As a result, he received several hundred scraps of paper with streets, buildings and directions drawn on them, combining which, Nobutaka Aozaki received an almost complete map of the central part of New York and a fragmentary map of the whole of Manhattan. Her artist demonstrates in his own studio and at personal exhibitions.
