Stefan Strumbel (Stefan Strumbel), considered one of the rising stars of the European art scene, is best known for a series of timepieces designed in pop art style. In these bright and non-standard works, the author embodies his vision of modern Germany and Bavarian kitsch.
The main element of Strumbel's works is the traditional cuckoo clock, which he decorates at his own discretion. The design of the watch certainly includes a skull or bones, images of animals and weapons against the background of more familiar leaves and curls - in this way the author touches on the themes of cruelty, violence, death and even pornography.
Stefan Strumbel was born in 1979 in Offenburg, Germany. For a long time he was a graffiti artist, but five years ago he left this occupation and started designing watches. In addition, he creates crucifixes and wooden masks that combine traditional Catholic symbols with pop art. “Social values and traditional ideals are changing,” says the author. His works both provoke and attract audiences, criticizing traditions and violating prohibitions.
Many people dislike Strumbel's watches, but there are no fewer people who want to buy them: in Freiburg's Galerie Springmann, they ask for $ 1,200 to $ 35,000 for one piece. "Their popularity is due to the fact that they embody the spirit of modern Germany," says Mon Muellerschoen, curator from Munich. "This Germany remembers its past, but is ready to take a new, fun and colorful path and accept its clichés with irony."
