The Dream City of Michael Paul Smith

Photos by Michael Paul Smith are not what they seem. You are sure that these are ordinary cityscape shots, aren't you? But no. The world in the photographs of the author was made by his own hands in miniature. And no Photoshop.

It all started with Michael Paul Smith's passion for modeling and photography, and ended with a stunning redevelopment of the city in which the author grew up. The works of Michael Paul are not exact one hundred percent copies of city landscapes, however, according to the author, they very accurately convey their atmosphere and mood - as they are preserved in his memory. You may notice that in different shots the photographer builds different compositions from the same houses or, conversely, leaves the buildings in place, but puts them in a new environment each time. You might think that Michael Paul Smith is experimenting to create the city of his dreams.

As the author himself notes, his work can be attributed to real art, because he does not use anything other than a camera to create stunningly realistic pictures. “This is the oldest trick described in specialized books: choose the right background for the models and take a picture,” explains Michael Paul. Probably half of the success of his photographs lies precisely in the right environment, because miniature models are photographed against the background of real nature - and in the end there is no doubt that both cars and houses are real.

Miniatures are made in 1/24 scale of real size. For several years of work, Michael Paul Smith managed to photograph his dream city, called Elgin Park, both against the backdrop of lush summer greenery and against the backdrop of snow-covered winter landscapes.

Michael Paul Smith was born in 1950 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And although he has lived in New England for the past 40 years, Pittsburgh has always remained a "spiritual geographic center" for him. During his life, the author managed to work as an illustrator of books and wallpaper, a designer of museum exhibitions and an art director of a retail chain … Now all these skills help him in his passion for modeling.
