Born in the UK and raised in Nigeria, artist Yinka Shonibare, between two worlds, creates works in which he addresses the heritage of the two cultures as well as the political issues of the colonized culture. British artist of Nigerian origin Yinka Shonibare is renowned for his exploration of class and racial issues that have found expression in a wide variety of art forms: sculpture, photography, painting and installations. Innocent and disturbing at the same time, his works are drawn to history and culture, breaking the boundaries of ethnography, design and contemporary art.
In her artistic practice, Yinka Shonibare explores the construction of cultural identity by exploring class, racial and colonial issues. He is known for using brightly colored textiles worn on headless mannequins. The fabric from which the costumes are created is initially associated with the Indonesian archipelago, later it began to be produced in the Netherlands, and then was exported to Africa, where it became a symbol of national pride. Shonibare refers to history to show the socio-economic domination of Europe, which was established through trade and colonialism. The crisp Victorian style of dress and mannequin costumes evokes the period of British history when Africa was colonized. Through his work, the Nigerian artist explores the complex economic and racial interactions between the colonized and dominant cultures of Europe, Asia and Africa. Fabric, matter is a means of researching contemporary African identity, as well as a metaphor for the mixed and intertwined historical nature of world culture.
Currently, the Brooklyn Museum displays more than twenty sculptures, paintings, large-format installations by Yinka Shonibare. The exhibition will run until September 20, after which it will be seen by visitors to the Museum of Modern Art in Sydney, Australia, and the National Museum of African Art in Washington. In addition, a show is planned for 2010 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Yinka Shonibare was born in London in 1962. He was 3 years old when the family moved to Nigeria. At the age of 17, the artist returned to London, where he attended the Wimbledon College of Art
