Australian city Sheffield, located at the foot of the majestic Mount Roland on the northwestern coast of Tasmania, can rightly be called city-museum … This small town attracts tourists from different parts of the world, as its streets resemble an exhibition hall with a huge number of paintings depicting simple scenes from the everyday life of the townspeople. Each of these paintings is a real work of art!
The quiet and calm life of Sheffield is a source of inspiration for artists. The main occupation of the inhabitants of this city is agriculture. The farmers raise sheep and pigs, grow potatoes and a variety of vegetables, and many of them are involved in wood processing.
Until the 1980s, Sheffield was an unremarkable city, whose population grew dramatically during the construction of several hydroelectric power plants nearby. However, after the construction was completed, the workers dispersed, and a period of crisis came for the city's economy. An initiative group of local residents decided to save Sheffield, transforming it so that it turned from a provincial town into an attractive tourist destination.
Inspired by the history of the small Canadian town of Chemainus, which was saved from ruin by the art of wall painting, the Kentish Association for Tourism decided to revive the city of Sheffield. To do this, it was supposed to decorate the streets with numerous frescoes that would please not only residents, but also guests of the town.
The first painting appeared in December 1986, since then their number has been constantly growing, and the collection has been replenished with new exhibits. Today, more than sixty murals can be seen depicting the Sheffield scenic countryside. Many of them are dedicated to the rich history of the city, outstanding personalities or simply beautiful natural landscapes that can be seen in the surrounding area. Frescoes are painted on the walls of houses, they are scattered throughout the city, many paintings are "exhibited" along the road, so that already approaching the city, curious tourists can appreciate such an unusual project. By the way, we note that such a beautification of the city has yielded results - about 220,000 people come to Sheffield every year to see this unusual open-air exhibition.
