“I was born with a love for animals. It seems to be in my blood,”says the American artist Lesley Harrison about herself. Leslie has been painting professionally for 33 years. She managed to combine love for animals with a passion for painting, which resulted in a wonderful series of paintings of animals, depicting which, the artist manages not only to catch the spirit of each of them, but also to convey to the viewer the individuality, grace and strength of each animal.
Leslie Harrison is one of the best pastel painters. Her lively and colorful work is often confused with oil paintings or even photographs. To achieve the most realism, Harrison works on velor paper, which smooths out lines and color, but also uses gritty paper to sharpen the most important details. In 1975, when Leslie Harrison picked up a pastel pencil, she realized that this is love for life. By 1983, she had sold enough paintings to quit her job and live a life of creativity. It is quite difficult to master the skill of drawing with pastels, but the American artist has succeeded in this and has earned several professional awards for her excellent technique of execution. She is also a member of the Pastel Society of America.
Talking about herself, Leslie Harrison admits that she is very lucky because people like what she draws and they buy her work. A couple of times she watched as the audience simply stood in front of her paintings and cried under the influx of emotions. What more could an artist want? After all, this is the greatest gift. Her work is appreciated and loved for one simple reason: everything that is created from the heart touches the souls and hearts of others. Leslie depicts each animal as a person, it does not matter whether it is a cat, a wolf or a horse. She wants to convey to the viewer the spirit and emotions that animals awaken in her.
Leslie Harrison lives in Sacramento, California with her husband, sculptor John Keller, 8 cats and 2 horses.
