The series of portraits “Intuition” by German photographer Carsten Witte is a hymn to elusive beauty. Everything is changeable. Only photography can stop the moment - this is the main idea of “Intuition”.
The hair of the models is pulled back, the shoulders are bare, the skin tone on the shoulders almost merges with the background … It seems that nothing can distract the viewer from these very young faces, artificially disfigured by time.
Witte's portraits are frighteningly realistic: young girls look at the viewer, through whose faces the bones of the skull show through. The photographer does not try to be a moralist, he does not set himself the goal of shocking the viewer: Witte seems to lead us to a simple thought about how important it is to appreciate the moment, how important it is to enjoy youth and beauty, because everything is perishable.
The photographer almost always balances between open provocation and a deep understanding of the aesthetics of art. One American magazine called Witte "The David Lynch of Fashion Photography." It was remarked unusually correctly: Witte offers the viewer a kind of riddle, the answer to which does not always lie on the surface, if it exists at all.
Biographical information about this photographer is surprisingly scarce, and it boils down, literally, to a few facts: he was born in 1964 in Hamburg. At the age of 19 he worked in a large advertising agency, and a few years later he was lucky enough to take part in several joint projects with famous photographers of that time. In 1986 he studied communication design (communication through visual objects) in Hamburg, and three years later his first photographs were published.
Now Karsten Witte exhibits a lot - his work can be found in large galleries in Germany, USA, France and Australia. Since 1995, his own design studio has been opened in Hamburg.
