The book is an amazing world that does not limit your imagination. The film is a vision of the picture by one person - the director. Most people who have read a work and then watched a film based on it will agree that cinema can rarely convey all the details and atmosphere of a book.

There have always been writers and poets who went against social boundaries. There are also many of them in modern society. There are quite controversial personalities in the literary environment who are discussed and condemned, their works are forbidden to read or do not understand. For example, Chuck Palahniuk, Hunter Thompson, Charles Bukowski. Each of them has one or more novels that cause very conflicting feelings in people. In their works, themes are raised: addiction, violence, antisocial behavior, promiscuity, etc. If you look one-sidedly, you can only condemn both the writers themselves and their novels, but if you try to understand the difficult life of each character, you can see deep personal experiences, psychological trauma and emotional pain.

Chuck Palahniuk "Choking"

Charles Michael Palahniuk
Charles Michael Palahniuk

The writer was born on February 21, 1962 in the city of Pesco, which is located in the state of Washington. Until the age of 14, he lived with his family in a trailer, then his parents divorced and began to live separately. Chuck and his three brothers often had to stay in the care of their grandparents on the ranch. The grandfather of the future famous writer was a Ukrainian who moved to the United States back in 1907. He left his family a Ukrainian surname, which was originally Palanyuk.

Having already become famous, Chuck Palahniuk caused condemnation of society with his work, his novels were not understood by everyone, because they are distinguished by their straightforwardness, gloom and harsh realities of life. Chuck confessed to the press that he was homosexual, but he never disclosed the name of his partner, believing that his personal life should not be made public. Or perhaps he feared excessive fan attention. It is only known that he lives in Vancouver with his partner on the outskirts of the city.

The novel "Choking" was written in 2001, it tells the story of two comrades who lead an extremely strange lifestyle. They play the roles of historical characters from ancient times in theme parks. Both friends are sex addicts, but are trying to learn how to control their addiction, so they attend anonymous group classes. Victor Mancini, the protagonist of the book, makes money by faking his own suffocation in various public places. Each time he is saved by different people, and then they also send him money. In this way he manipulates the consciousness of a person, because in his "savior" then a certain concern and a desire to help wake up.

Victor's mother is in a hospital for the mentally ill, and he needs to pay for her stay there. That is why he makes money in such a strange way. Perhaps he can get the required amount faster this way. His mother soon ceases to recognize him and believes that in front of her is not a son, but a lawyer, to whom she once begins to tell the story of Victor's birth. In this story, she reports that her son was immaculately conceived and he is none other than a clone of Jesus himself.

Hunter Thompson "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"

Thompson was born in Kentucky on July 18, 1937. After the death of his father, Hunter's mother had to raise three sons alone. Unable to withstand the stress, she began to excessively consume alcohol. The boys remained in the care of themselves. At the age of 19, the young man voluntarily went into the army, because he crashed the car of his then employer. But in the army, he also did not last long, because he was distinguished by willfulness, insubordination, rebellion and a snobbish position. All this was entered into his profile and fired.

After the army, he worked in magazines, but was also fired due to fights and disobeying orders. Also, the writer was a great connoisseur and collector of weapons. Once Thompson got drunk to the point that his wife had to call the police. When the cops asked about finding weapons in the house, the wife honestly answered that they had 22 barrels, and all were loaded. Hunter was called the "great American nightmare" for his constant outrageous behavior and social disturbance.

His novel "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" drew public condemnation, because the whole plot takes place against the background of drug intoxication of the characters. It is difficult to make out where the reality is and where the hallucinations are. The heroes constantly use illegal substances, threaten people, and have an affair with an underage girl who is also given drugs. They say that Thompson described himself and his friend in this book, that is, the characters are not completely fictional.

The writer himself was able to get rid of drug addiction, and his friend went missing. The deep and positive meaning of the book is to understand that after any euphoria comes a period of awakening and awareness of all the horror of what is happening. Perhaps it is such a crude but realistic description of events that will help people not even start using drugs. In 2005, Hunter Thompson shot himself in his own home, writing in his suicide note "football season is over." He was 67 years old. He said it was 17 years longer than he wanted to live.

Charles Bukowski "Women"

The writer was born on August 16, 1920 in Germany, but after three years his family was forced to move to the United States. Bukowski's childhood was not sweet, his father drank all the time and beat him with his mother, this forever left an imprint on the character and fate of the writer. He himself also began to drink alcohol in his youth, and subsequently could rarely stop. He had very long binges, he often wrote his works in a state of alcoholic intoxication. All his novels are partly autobiographical, he wrote about his life and about what he knew well. The manner of writing is distinguished by frankness, honesty, licentiousness.

Bukowski sincerely considered himself ugly, because as a child he suffered from acne, which left an imprint on his face in adulthood. But he also understood that he was a very intelligent, erudite and charming person. That was probably what the women liked about him. At times Bukowski behaved extremely antisocial, on the border with open hostility and aggression towards others, but at the same time he was very fond of animals and despised those who offend them.

The novel "Women" tells about the hero's numerous love affairs, which are written off from the life of the writer himself. He was married three times and also had a large number of partners. The book describes the entire life of the writer and each of his women. He had many intrigues and several significant long-term romances. One might get the impression that the hero of the novel does not really respect and appreciate women, but the book is not about that at all. On the contrary, it is about love, feelings, drama, psychological trauma, fear of real closeness, difficult choices.

All of these authors are very famous and controversial, as are their works. All three are united by the fact that each has their own deep personal drama, because of which they became so wrong in the eyes of society. The same is broadcast on the characters in their books. Perhaps such popularity of novels is due to the fact that each writer put a piece of himself into his creation. They wrote about their lives: difficult, painful, sometimes scary. But this frightening reality is very captivating with its honesty and sincerity.

You should not condemn and be too categorical about such outstanding personalities and their novels, it is better to learn to understand the hidden meaning of what the authors are trying to convey. Often, heartache or a need for love can be behind violence and cruelty.
