September 7 marks the 121st anniversary of the birth of the famous singer, People's Artist of Russia Isabella Yurieva, who was called the "queen of romance" and "white gypsy". She was the same age as the century and during her long hundred-year life she witnessed all the cardinal changes in the life of her country. But these changes did not promise her happiness: at the beginning of the twentieth century. she was worshiped, then her songs were forbidden, and in the 1970s. they remembered her again. She received the title of People's Artist of the USSR only at the age of 95, and for the last time she appeared on the stage on the eve of her 100th birthday. Why the queen of the romance was accused of vulgarity and did not allow her to perform - further in the review.
According to some sources, Bella Livikova was born in 1899, according to others - in 1902. Acquaintances of the singer later claimed that already in adulthood she confessed: she had reduced herself 3 years, deliberately creating confusion. Her hometown was Rostov-on-Don, and her strongest hobby since childhood was theater. Her father was a master of theater hats, and her mother worked as an apprentice in the theater. One day, a violinist living next door heard the singing of 17-year-old Bella and predicted a bright future for her on stage. He invited her to perform at a concert in the city garden, where he himself played with the orchestra.
She remembered her first public appearance for the rest of her life: "".
The singer did not know musical notation, but absolute pitch and good musical memory helped her out. Bella Livikova turned into Isabella Yuryeva, in 1920 she began performing on the stage at the Hermitage Garden Theater, and four years later she moved from Moscow to Leningrad. At the audition at the Yudovsky Theater, she conquered all the variety administrators, among whom was the director of the Petrograd Theater Trust, Joseph Arkadiev. After her speech, he said: "". He then repeated this compliment to her for 46 years, because Arkadiev became not only the administrator of the singer, but also her husband.
In 1925, shortly after the wedding, the newlyweds went on a honeymoon trip to Paris and spent about a year there. Their son was born in France. They had the opportunity to stay in France - Arkadyev had relatives in Paris, but the singer wanted to return to her homeland. The family settled in Moscow, St. George's continued to perform, and a year later a misfortune happened - their son had a congenital heart defect, and he died suddenly. That evening, the singer was supposed to perform in the music hall on Sadovaya, and the director refused to cancel her concert, telling her: "".
After that, Arkadiev insisted that his wife take a break and stop performing. She gave her last concert in 1928, after which she disappeared from the stage for 8 years - the singer could not recover from the loss of her child, and her husband did not want her to return to the stage. But music was her only outlet, without which Yuryeva could not imagine her life. When she returned to touring, a new complexity arose: in the 1930s-1940s. romance turned out to be actually a forbidden genre, such music was called philistine, bourgeois. During the recording of her disc, the editors demanded: "".
Later, the singer recalled: "". The singer tried to defend her repertoire, but in response she received the following resolution from the officials: "". And although the queen of romance was not allowed to perform fully, she was several times invited to sing in the Kremlin for members of the government.
During the war, Yuryeva performed as part of concert brigades in front of the soldiers and was amazed at how popular romances were among them. She said: "".
In the post-war period, the romance was again banned: it was classified as a "light genre", branded as vicious and ideologically unsuitable. Although her songs "Sasha", "White Night", "He Left", "If You Can - Forgive" the whole country sang, the way to the big stage was closed for her. In 1959, Yuryeva was forced to disband her ensemble, after which she performed in group concerts only from time to time. In 1966 she left the professional stage. She was remembered only in the 1970s. - restored her records, again began to invite her to concerts, on radio, on television. But the singer was already over 70, and there was no talk of touring.
Despite all the difficulties that she had to go through, until the 1970s. she felt absolutely happy, because next to her was her husband, who devoted his whole life to her. Isabella Yurieva said about him: "".
The queen of romance has spent the last 30 years all alone. She had no children, none of her friends remained. When she took the stage of the Moscow Column Hall at the age of 95, the audience listened to her standing. The last time the singer performed was shortly before her 100th birthday, before which she said: "". And with the advent of the new century - January 20, 2000 - Isabella Yurieva passed away. The same age as the twentieth century left with him.
Her old notes about this still go chilly: Love of all life in one romance by Isabella Yurieva.
