Tomsk is a unique city from an architectural point of view, because there are still many wooden houses preserved in it. Among them you can find real masterpieces of Russian architecture, which look like either mysterious castles, or teremki from some old Russian fairy tale. You look at the turrets and intricate carved patterns and you are amazed: how much imagination and talent the local architects had, who built these elegant houses at the beginning of the last century!
House with Firebirds
The house with firebirds, as Tomsk residents call it, is part of a manor complex that belonged to the merchant Leonty Zhelyabo before the revolution. On the territory of the estate there are two remake buildings and two old ones, including a house-wing "with firebirds".
The building was built at the beginning of the last century, the author of the project was the local architect Pyotr Fedorovsky. There is a legend that this house was erected as a gift to the daughter of the merchant Zhelyabo and that is why it is somewhat reminiscent of a wedding cake.
The building was built in the style of Russian wooden architecture. With a combination of decorative forms, towers tending upward with elegant finishes and luscious wood carvings, this building is considered almost the most significant in the list of monuments of wooden architecture that have survived in the city.
An interesting detail: the scrolls depicted on the frames, according to local historians, can symbolize the Talmud and the Torah, since Leonty Zhelyabo was a Jew.
This house is a federal cultural heritage site; the building was recently renovated. By the way, ordinary townspeople live in it. Residents say that this old wooden house has a very good energy.
House with a tent
The building was dubbed "lace" because of the large number of decorative elements painted in white and resembling lace. The second common name is the House with a Tent.
The wooden mansion was built by order of the wealthy local merchant-industrialist Yegor (Georgy) Golovanov - for him and his four sons.
The project manager was the outstanding architect Stanislav Khomich. By the way, this is not the only building in Tomsk built according to his design.
After the revolution, the building was nationalized. Now it houses the Russian-German House - an organization that unites Russian Germans, organizes linguistic camps and other events.

Dwelling house of Semyonova
This pretty stone-and-wood building dates back to 1900. The practice of building such houses, where the basement floor is brick, and the upper part is made of wood, was not uncommon for Tomsk in those days.
The Semyonova House is justly recognized as an architectural monument of federal significance. The project is very interesting: a facade with two ledges (projections), turrets, twisted wooden columns of the terrace, an abundance of carvings on window frames - all this is admirable.
House with dragons
This house was built in 1917. The customer was the local gymnasium teacher Bronislav Bystrzycki, and the building was designed by Vikenty Orzheshko. They say that the architect was fond of either Chinese or Scandinavian mythology, which prompted him to use stylized dragon heads as a symbol. At least seven wooden carved dragons decorating the pediments, as well as the visor over the entrance to the house, very much resemble similar elements on the famous European buildings, and not long before the design of this house, Orzheshko had just returned from Europe.
The dragon heads are arranged in pairs. Two dragons face north, two toward the south and two more toward the west, and on the east side of the building is a seventh head, which has a twisted tail with a forked sting.
The building clearly shows signs of Art Nouveau - as you know, a very popular architectural style at the beginning of the last century. By the way, initially the house had a bluish color. There are several more interesting wooden houses of Tomsk, which are definitely worth a look for the guests of the city:

How apartments were rented 100 years ago: What were the tenement houses for the elite and how the guests lived poorer
Pre-revolutionary apartment buildings are a special topic and a special layer both in Russian architecture and in residential construction in general. In the late XIX - early XX century, the popularity of this trend began to grow so rapidly that houses for renting apartments and rooms for rent began to appear in large cities like mushrooms. Wealthy merchants understood that building such houses was a profitable business. It is very interesting what development this direction would have received further, but, alas, a revolution happened … Fortunately, we can still do anything
Why were houses on legs built in Soviet Moscow, and where can you find such buildings

"Kissed, bewitched": to whom the poet confessed his love, to whom the lyrics were alien
The history of the creation of the poem "Kissed, bewitched …", which has become a popular romance, is very curious. After reading it, it may seem that it was written by a young man in love with an ardent gaze. But in fact it was written by a serious 54-year-old serious pedant with the manners and appearance of an accountant. In addition, until 1957, it was in that year that Zabolotsky created his "Last Love" cycle, intimate lyrics were completely alien to him. And suddenly, at the end of life, this wondrous lyric cycle
