Erast Garin (real name - Gerasimov) was born in 1902 in Ryazan. After leaving school, he volunteered for the Red Army, but he did not have to fight - oddly enough, it was there that his acting career began. For the first time, Erast appeared on the stage at the Ryazan garrison theater - the 1st amateur theater of the Red Army. There he also took the stage name Garin.

When the aspiring actor arrived in Moscow, Vsevolod Meyerhold appreciated his talent and invited him to his director's workshop. Erast called Meyerhold the Master all his life, and he wrote that Garin was his favorite student and the most respected theater actor. Colleagues whispered that Meyerhold creates all productions specifically for Garin's favorite. At the age of 20, Erast Garin became a member of the troupe of the Moscow Academic Theater. Meyerhold, later appeared on the stages of the Proletkult Workers' Theater, the Leningrad Comedy Theater, and the Film Actor's Studio Theater in Moscow. His film debut took place later - at that time he was 32 years old. Their collaboration with the writer and screenwriter Yevgeny Schwartz turned out to be very fruitful - Garin played the King in the movie fairy tales "Cinderella" and "An Ordinary Miracle" according to his scripts, and in the second of them, together with his wife Hesei Lokshina, he acted as a director. Best of all, the actor succeeded in comedic roles - the audience remembered him in the image of the main character's grandfather in Eldar Ryazanov's film "A Girl Without an Address."

Erast Garin managed to play dozens of roles in cinema and theater and was actively filming until, in the mid-1960s, a tragedy happened on the set of the film "Merry Rasplyuevsky Days", where Garin and his wife again acted as a director. as a result of a car accident, the actor lost an eye. The second eye survived, but saw very poorly. After that, the directors practically stopped inviting him to the shooting, which was a serious blow for Garin.

In the late 1970s. the brilliant comedian was out of work. In addition, the actor's peculiar appearance (a thin physique, an oblong face, a long pointed nose, protruding ears, deep-set eyes) did not give him the opportunity to play serious dramatic roles, especially the main ones - the directors saw him only in a comedic role, and they called him a real element movie tales. The artistic council of the Lenfilm film studio refused Garin to play the main roles, since his appearance, in their opinion, did not correspond to the image of the Soviet positive hero. But even episodic roles in his performance became vivid and memorable. One of his last notable roles was professor-archeologist Maltsev in Gentlemen of Fortune.
