Many people remember the history of the creation of the painting by Ilya Repin "Ivan the Terrible kills his son", and also know about the fatal circumstances that overtook the models and the creator of this canvas. So, Vsevolod Garshin, posing for the image of the murdered prince, in a state of deep depression jumped from the fourth floor. And the artist Grigory Myasoyedov, who served as a model for the image of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, once in anger almost killed his little son, who in the future also became an artist …, - the artist later said.

The author of the canvas soon withered his right hand, and until the end of his life Repin was forced to work with his left. Mysticism, you say … Who knows? …

However, today we are not talking about Repin's painting, but about the fate of the Itinerant artist Grigory Myasoedov, whose name was forgotten after his death … And what do you think because of what? The most dear person put his hand to the oblivion of the talented painter. Immediately after the death of Grigory Grigorievich, the son Ivan, the same one whom his father almost killed, sold all his things and his father's collection of paintings for a pittance. The museum workers, however, have saved about two dozen canvases and albums with sketches of the artist, by which we today can judge the work of the Russian painter Grigory Myasoedov, who worked in the second half of the 19th century.

What prevented two relatives and talented artists - father and son, from living under one roof and finding a common language? Is it really the notorious painting by Repin? More on this and much more later in the review.

Grigory Grigorievich Myasoedov (1834-1911) is an outstanding Russian painter who went down in the history of Russian culture primarily as the founder of the movement among artists. He was a permanent board member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions for nearly forty years. In the late 1860s, it was Myasoedov who came up with the idea of organizing the Association of Itinerants, and it was he who became the author of its first charter. Therefore, Russian art history literally owes its brightest pages to Myasoyedov.

Deprived of a parental blessing

Grigory Myasoedov from an old noble family of the Tula province. A gifted boy in childhood read and drew a lot. The father encouraged his son's interest in art and literature in every possible way. But it was not at all easy for the two Gregories to find a common language by the nature of their characters - once they quarreled so much that the parent completely deprived the offspring of financial assistance. And Gregory Jr. left for St. Petersburg, not receiving his father's blessing to become an artist.

In the capital, Myasoedov becomes a volunteer at the Academy of Arts, and throughout all 10 years of study he will be in poverty. - this is how Grigory recalled the difficult student years.

Nevertheless, the young artist graduated from the Academy well and received a retirement trip to Europe at the expense of the state treasury. He lived and worked in Italy, and the paintings created there were sent to Russia. For them he was awarded large and small gold medals. Creative life went uphill, and with it incomes.

And now, it seemed, the young and successful artist had already forgotten the quarrel with his father, but for his son in the future Gregory would become just as "formidable" and unshakable.

Character is destiny

Characterizing the artist from a psychological point of view, it should be noted that the sphere of realization of all the creative and life potential of Grigory Myasoedov was not the family, but the environment. He was a very difficult person, in communication with whom many felt uncomfortable, especially those closest to him. His harsh character fully mirrored his appearance:. And his speech sounded original, expressing progressive thoughts, and sometimes paradoxes. Very often it was accompanied by irony, caustic sarcasm, and mockery.

His first marriage was unhappy and childless. The artist's wife, unable to withstand the unbearable nature of her husband, left him. Later, 47-year-old Myasoyedov got along with his student, a young artist Ksenia Ivanova, who in 1881 gave birth to the painter's son Vanechka. However, he was absolutely sure that the son was not his bloodline, and therefore officially issued a paper on the adoption of his own child, and his wife was categorically forbidden to show maternal feelings for the baby and call herself "mother". Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Vanya was sure that Ksenia was his nurse and servant in their house, and his own father was his guardian.

Ksenia really did not much resemble his wife, she was mostly busy with the housework, performing the functions of a housekeeper, cook and nanny. And Grigory Myasoyedov, being sure that at one time the girl caught him "like a quail in a net", favorably accepted her care, allowed her to live nearby.

Ivan's miserable childhood

As soon as the baby grew up, Myasoedov gave his offspring to be raised by his friend, the landscape painter Kiselev, in Moscow. (Just at that time he posed for Repin for the image of Ivan the Terrible). The Kiselevs loved children, they had seven of their own. And with Vanechka Myasoedov, who was a child with quirks, they were not bad enough to make up.

However, a few years later, his father admitted that his blood was flowing in little Ivan. And this happened thanks to an incident that happened in the Kiselevs' house. The day before, many guests gathered there, including Grigory Myasoyedov himself. When the guests wished to see Vanya, the pupil of the Kiselevs, they unlocked for a long time, but they still had to bring the tomboy to the audience.

And then 7-year-old Myasoyedov Jr., having appeared in front of a multitude of guests staring at him, without hesitation, went to the artist Nikolai Makovsky, the brother of the famous Konstantin Yegorovich … and relished blowing his nose in the floor of his chic frock coat. Everyone was dumbfounded, and all doubts were instantly dispelled from Myasoedov Sr. “my son,” he thought with pride. And on the same day he took his blood home, near Poltava.

However, even after that, no significant changes occurred in the relationship between father and son. At the moment of aggression, the artist once hit the little boy so that he even thought that he had killed his son. But, thank God nothing happened.

In 1899, Ivan's mother, the only kind soul who loved him, died of tuberculosis. And he found out the whole truth about her after her death, when Grigory Grigorievich accidentally made a reservation. The news that he was not a foster child at all, but the artist's own son, shocked him to the very depths of his soul. Myasoedov Jr. actually renounced his father, he moved to the outbuilding and did not speak with his negligent parent for months.

However, in spite of all the troubles in the Myasoyedov family, the father tried to give his son a decent education, in particular art. For almost 10 years, Ivan attended a private art school organized in Poltava by his father. Then there was the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and the passion for power sports … But all his life, the father's furious dislike for his son was a stumbling block, which determined the direction of all future life paths of Myasoedov Jr. - "winding, unpredictable, sometimes very slippery roads."

In a word, Ivan Myasoedov's life was very stormy and eventful, full of adventures and worthy of a detailed story. in the next review. There you can also read about the retribution of Myasoedov Sr. and the sweet revenge of Myasoedov Jr.
