The influence of films and TV shows on our lives can hardly be overestimated. Today they have become not only entertainment, but also a way of learning about the world, an opportunity to study history (if, of course, a documentary series) or get acquainted with new fashion trends. However, analysts say: film projects themselves have a very effective influence on fashion, forcing the viewer to pay attention to certain things, hobbies and problems. The phenomenon has even been dubbed the "Netflix effect," after a provider of streaming media-based movies and series.

After the premiere of the series "Queen's Move" about a girl dreaming of becoming a great chess player, the demand for chess and textbooks on this game suddenly increased. Even on sites selling expensive chess sets, consumer demand has skyrocketed.

The digital release of the series was released on October 23, 2020. Already in the first month after that, sales of chess on popular platforms grew by 100% or more, while sales of chess textbooks increased by more than 800%. It has become incredibly fashionable to play chess, and therefore the number of subscribers to the channels of famous chess players has rapidly increased, and virtual chess tournaments have begun to be held.

The Queen's move also influenced the sales of Bulova brand watches that appeared on the hand of the protagonist Beth Harmon.

The Netflix documentary series "The King of the Tigers: Murder, Chaos and Madness" sparked a new round of discussions among supporters and opponents of zoos. The tape about the eccentric owner of a private zoo stirred up animal advocates, and made ordinary viewers pay attention to the ethics of zoos and the keeping of wild cats in private estates.

The show's zoo was closed under pressure from the animal rights charity Peta in the summer of 2020. Zoo owner G. W. Zoo in Oklahoma Jeff Lowe announced the decision in his Facebook post.

Carol Baskin, animal rights activist and general manager of Big Cat Rescue in Florida, also ran into trouble after the show was released. The film deals with the enmity between two zoos, and in the life of Carol Baskin claims that many of the facts voiced in "King of the Tigers" are far from the truth.

In fairness, the series dealt with Carol's involvement in the disappearance of her husband Don Lewis in 1997. After the release of the series, Don Lewis's family went to court to check the facts about the long-term disappearance of the husband of the reserve director and about Carol Baskin's appropriation of a fortune of 4.5 million pounds.

"The King of the Tigers: Murder, Chaos and Madness" brought into fashion the style of Joe Exotic: haircut, animal prints, elements of cowboy clothing. Joe Exotic himself was able to significantly improve his financial situation by selling original branded goods under the Odaingerous brand, which were sold out just a few hours after they went on sale. Other brands have also noted increased demand for apparel featuring wild cats.

British monarchy

The series "The Crown" made viewers again interested in the British monarchy and remember not only about Princess Diana, but also about other members of the family. After the third season, interest in the personality of Princess Anne increased significantly, they immediately started talking about her in fashion publications and began to analyze her style. However, requests for the purchase of goods mentioning members of the British royal family (books, magazines, things, souvenirs, etc.) increased by almost 100%.

The images of the heroines of the series did not go unnoticed. Fashionistas were interested in the style of Princess Anne and Margaret Thatcher, and therefore sales of things similar to their clothes and shoes also increased.

At the California Coachella festival, and later at New York Fashion Week in 2019, makeup with rhinestones in the eyes, glitter in the form of tears and other bright and unusual accents turned out to be in trend. The reason for this was the teenage series "Euphoria", the heroines of which appeared in the frame exactly in this form.

Emily in Paris has contributed to the increased demand for Kangol Panama hats, red berets and handbags from various brands similar to the on-screen Aldo model. However, the whole film is filled with beautiful things and after watching it, there is a desire to buy dresses and skirts, blouses and jewelry, like those of its heroines.

The Last Dance miniseries about the Lakers basketball club has sparked a new splash of fashion on the Nike Jordan. "Normal People" made viewers look for a silver chain, like Paul Mescal's character. Even an Instagram account appeared with a 176,000-strong army of followers.

It is worth noting that Netflix often uses well-known brands in the frame, while their sales increase immediately after the release of the film. According to unverified information, manufacturers pay Netflix between 50 thousand and half a million dollars to appear in one episode.

Russian filmmakers follow the same path. For example, in the series "Kept Women" you can see the goods of famous brands and come across a mention of the Tinkoff Bank, and "The Good Man" raised the issue of attitudes towards women.

The links between art and fashion define specific moments in history. Both of these mediums reflect social, economic and political changes from the roaring twenties to the vibrant eighties. Artists with their work helped to shape a new look at the art and fashion of the twentieth century, however, they often performed in collaboration with fashion designers.
