In France, there is a museum dedicated to the works of Etienne Terrus, a fauvist artist who was once friends with André Derain, Aristille Mayol and Henri Matisse. The management of this museum recently announced that many of the works in the collection are fakes. In total, about 80 such works were counted.
The museum kept the works of the artist, which were considered originals. And only as a result of the check it became known that many of the canvases of the artist, who was one of the founders of such a trend as fauvism, in fact turned out to be only high-quality fakes.
The name of the trend in French painting "Fauvism" came from the word "wild". The peculiarity of this direction lies in the use of expressive colors by the artist. In this manner, painters created works in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the artists who are called the founders of Fauvism is the Frenchman Etienne Terrus. In 1994, the painter's hometown of Roussillon decided to open a museum. The administration of this museum decided to start restoration work. It was this desire that helped to find out that the paintings in the museum are fake. The examination was initiated by Eric Forcada, an art specialist and historian, who was the first to question the authenticity of the paintings.
The specialists who came to carry out the check noted that in reality many paintings are fake and assessed the damage from the purchase of such works, which amounted to 160 thousand euros. In total, the museum exhibits about 200 works by Etienne Terrus, of which 82 paintings are not real, were not painted with the brush of the famous Fauvist.
The specialists who were engaged in authenticity verification were very surprised that some of the paintings contain buildings that this artist could not see, simply because they were erected after 1922, that is, after the death of the French painter.
The local mayor called the current situation a disaster, because people had to pay to enter the museum, and almost half of the paintings they admired turned out to be fakes. They plan to find and punish those responsible for this. The city hall has even filed a lawsuit for violation of rights, crafts and fraud. The gendarmerie of the Eastern Pyrenees is looking for fraudsters. It is believed here that the attackers did not stop at counterfeiting Terrus' works alone.
