And Roman Katz dreamed of entering a circus school. Despite his obvious talent and good grades in his specialty, he could not become a student in any way, his nationality interfered. But he was admitted to the student theater "Parnas-2" at the Odessa Institute of Marine Engineers. It was there that in 1961 he saw the amateur artist Arkady Isaakovich Raikin and invited Katz to his theater, having previously advised him to take a stage name. So Katz became Kartsev. A little later, Viktor Ilchenko and Mikhail Zhvanetsky were admitted to the Theater of Miniatures of Arkady Raikin.

Somehow Kartsev expressed disagreement with the director's interpretation of the play based on Zhvanetsky. Raikin demanded that the actor follow the director's instructions, but the obstinate young man defended his opinion to the end. Unable to achieve understanding, he wrote a letter of resignation and went home to Odessa.

Returning, Kartsev began to work in symphonic jazz, where he drew attention to the young dancer from the corps de ballet. 17-year-old Victoria was not at all like other girls. A slender beauty with a long braid conquered the humorist. And he, as usual, immediately offered her his hand and heart.

They looked funny together: Roman is 160 cm tall and weighs only 47 kg. Victoria was 10 centimeters taller than him, and 20 centimeters taller in heels. But he so liked looking at her from the bottom up.

The parents of the young people were against their marriage. His - because he creates a family with a Russian girl, and her - because the groom is a Jew. But the lovers were able to prove to their relatives: their decision is final, they will certainly become husband and wife.
