The man, whom no one knew about until December 8, 1980, as a child, was desperately afraid of his own father. During his school years, he was constantly bullied by his peers, tried drugs early, and then began to play the guitar in churches and Christian nightclubs. On that fateful day, Mark David Chapman waited for John Lennon in the archway of his Dakota, Manhattan home to shoot him five times. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment with the right to petition for early release only after 20 years.
For 20 years, Chapman has consistently said that he dreams of the death penalty, but when the deadline for filing the first petition for early release approached, he still filed it. He explained this by the fact that he had long since got rid of his psychological problems that led to the tragedy of December 8, 1980, and felt able to lead a normal life. The commission refused him for the first time.
The activity of ordinary citizens played a role in this, who wrote thousands of letters to the authorities demanding to leave the killer of John Lennon behind bars. Over the next 11 years, he was refused five more times. There are persistent rumors that the real reason for the refusals is Yoko Ono, the musician's widow.
Allegedly, while she is alive, Mark David Chapman will be behind bars. Yoko Ono herself spoke repeatedly about her fear of Chapman, but many people are sure that if Chapman is released, she will immediately take revenge on her husband's murderer.
A person sentenced to life imprisonment receives many letters in prison. Some contain threats, others - only one question: "Why?" The former threaten Mark with reprisals, the latter genuinely wonder: what could have pushed a person to such a crime?
In September 2020, another hearing was held for Mark David Chapman's parole petition, as a result of which the killer of John Lennon was refused for the eleventh time.
ABC News received a transcript of the hearing, where Mark David Chapman gave the true reason for his crime. And she can shock many. He stated that the motive for the murder was an all-consuming desire to become famous.
He was jealous and angry, jealous of the lifestyle of John Lennon and all the members of The Beatles, of which he himself was a fan for many years. Chapman himself could not afford anything that Lennon had, who lived in a luxurious apartment and had a lot of money.
Parole commissioners asked Mark David Chapman if his thinking has changed in 40 years in prison. The offender replied that everything changed after the murder was committed. At that moment, a desire for fame was seething in him and there are simply no more objective reasons for the act, just as there are no and cannot be excuses for him.
He acquired a pistol three months before that tragic day and traveled to America, leaving his wife in Hawaii. In case he failed to kill John Lennon, Chapman had a list of three more people, also quite famous. When one of the commissars remarked that glory and shame are completely different concepts, and Chapman actually disgraced himself, the criminal replied: “Shame brings glory!”. These words became decisive in the final verdict after the hearing. Chapman was again denied parole.
The commissioners considered such a statement too alarming to release a criminal who assures everyone of his own repentance and desire to atone for his guilt. When deciding on this case, the commissioners decided: Chapman still remembers his euphoria after committing a crime. The awareness of his fame, according to the members of the commission, still seems to Mark David Chapman a positive moment in the whole history.
The offender was not helped by the promise to become an evangelist and committed Christian after his release. According to Chapman, he was going to show everyone how God loved him, despite the depth of his fall.
But the commission did not give him such an opportunity, considering it too dangerous to release a person who still does not hesitate to confess to a crime because of elementary black envy. What if, after a while, he will again envy someone's fame, wealth and prosperity?
John Lennon is a half-orphan from a poor Liverpool quarter, a former poor student and a bully who made his way only thanks to his own talent and intuition. Yoko Ono is a wealthy Japanese aristocrat with an excellent education and refined taste. However, they were both rebels and experimenters. Both were constantly looking for something new. Perhaps that is why they could not avoid meeting.
