In the 1920s, life in Paris was in full swing, it was the era of jazz, nightclubs, wealthy businessmen who willingly littered with money … It was the era of bohemia - writers and artists, directors and dancers. Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Scott Fitzgerald and, of course, his wife - Zelda … Her boundless talent and tragic fate will be discussed today.
Often Zelda is spoken of as "Fitzgerald's beloved", "Fitzgerald's daughter's mother", "troubled wife", "hot-tempered muse." However, all these definitions leave her in the shadows, confirming the statement that behind every great man there is a great woman. However, Zelda has never been a female supporting role. Shocking and courageous in her actions, she knew how to attract attention. And her work turned out to be so talented that it arouses interest even 70 years after her tragic death.
Zelda was born in 1900 in Alabama to a wealthy family. Since childhood, she did not need anything, was intelligent, loved to be in the spotlight. From her youth, she showed interest in writing and dancing, and, having barely matured, she began to willingly attend parties, shocking the audience with her behavior. Zelda could afford to smoke, drink alcohol and flirt in front of everyone.
She wrote about herself in a university magazine: “I love to ride boys' motorcycles, chew gum, smoke in public places, dance cheek to cheek, drink corn liquor and gin. I was the first who decided on a bob haircut, I made my way to the beach at night to swim in the light of the moon with the guys, and then at breakfast I pretended that nothing had happened."
Shortly after graduating from university in 1919, she met Scott at a party at a country club. Scott Fitzgerald was immediately captured by her demonic nature. “I love her, and this is the beginning and end of everything,” he wrote about their first meeting. Soon Scott (then an unknown writer) offered Zelda a hand and a heart, but she refused. Zelda changed her mind only after Fitzgerald's novel This Side of Paradise was sent to print.
In the very first days after it went on sale, the novel became a bestseller, and a week after the resounding success, the couple got married. Scott and Zelda were euphoric, bathed in glory, indolent. Two years later, Scott and Zelda had a daughter, they moved to France, where the novel The Great Gatsby was written. Zelda took up drawing and dancing, began to take ballet lessons. She was making progress and was a diligent student. Soon she received an invitation to perform with the Royal Ballet in Italy in 1928. By the way, she refused such an invitation, deciding for herself that she wanted to devote time and energy to writing short stories. Zelda was not devoid of literary talent, but clashes flared up between her and Scott: her husband accused his wife of plagiarizing his ideas.
In 1929, the Fitzgeralds practically went bankrupt, they had to forget about the luxurious life. A year later, Zelda was diagnosed with schizophrenia and unhealthy mood swings. This was the beginning of her long treatment in various clinics. During her treatment, Zelda wrote and drew a lot, in particular, she made the cycle an illustration for her beloved book "Alice in Wonderland".
Scott could not survive his wife's illness, he died of a heart attack on December 21, 1940 at the age of 44. Zelda lived without a lover for another eight years. Her passing was terrible. Zelda Fitzgerald was locked in a room where she was supposed to undergo electroshock therapy. The fire started when she was waiting for her turn with eight other patients. Everyone in the locked room was burned to death. They simply did not have a chance to escape.
