Gennady Nilov's parents had nothing to do with the art world, his father was an employee, and his mother was a cook. But his uncle, Pavel Kadochnikov, was a famous artist known throughout the USSR. Gennady's mother was the sister of Kadochnikov's wife, actress Rosalia Kotovich. In the post-war period, they all lived together in one apartment, and the boy's hobby for theater and cinema was passed on from his famous relatives.

At school, Gennady Nilov was the head of the drama club and staged performances, but at first he did not seriously think about the acting profession. He decided to enter the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute, but did not pass the physics exam. In the second marriage, Gennady Nilov had two sons - Alexey and Anton. The younger works as a manager in a tire manufacturing company, and the elder followed in his father's footsteps, although he was categorically against his choice - he knew firsthand about the disadvantages of the acting profession. But Alexei insisted on his own and, like his father, entered LGITMiK on the first try. After graduating from the institute, Alexey went to the army, where he was the liquidator of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

At first, his acting career was not very successful - until the age of 33, he did not receive noticeable roles in films, and even in the 1990s. there was no need to count on serious work. This continued until, in 1997, the project "Streets of Broken Lanterns" was launched, where Nilov played one of the main roles - Captain Andrei Larin.
