For someone who is busy with the work of a lifetime, there can hardly be anything more important than a reliable partner and companion. And it happens that such a person turns out to be a brother - one who has been familiar all his life, whom you consider, in a sense, an extension of yourself. Successful cooperation of two brothers is not so rare, but here are those of them, whose names are probably familiar to everyone. Their lives have evolved in different ways, but in all the stories you can catch the similarities.
1. The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm
The Brothers Grimm grew up in a family with a lot of religion. Great-grandfather was a Calvinist theologian, grandfather - a priest. But the main, perhaps, role in the training of the future founders of Germanic philology was played by their aunt, Juliana Charlotte Grimm, in the marriage of Schlemmer. Widowed at the age of 50, she took the most active part in the upbringing of the newly born nephew Jacob (in 1785), and after him Wilhelm (in 1786). In total, the family had nine brothers and sisters, three of them died in infancy. Aunt Juliana, like a priest's daughter, relied on the Bible, teaching the boys, but besides that she highly appreciated German folklore, becoming the very "Arina Rodionovna" that introduced the pupils with the world of fairy tales and forever infected them with an interest in this form of creativity. And the love of learning, which the Brothers Grimm distinguished until the end of their lives, arose largely thanks to their aunt.
Jacob and Wilhelm are known primarily as collectors of folklore, researchers of folk art. Collections of folk tales, compiled by the brothers Grimm, were created from the stories of residents of different German provinces. The main business of the brothers Grimm was linguistics. Already in old age, they started compiling the first dictionary of the German language, but did not finish the work. Jacob, who survived his brother by four years, managed to complete the letter "E" and died at his desk. It happened in 1863.
2. Brothers Goncourt, Edmond and Jules
This tandem of French writers not only enriched world literature. The name of the Goncourts gave the name of the most prestigious award that a writer can receive in this country.
Edmond was born in 1822 to a family of provincial nobles; Jules was born eight years later. Despite the difference in age, the brothers were inseparable from childhood, they found not only common interests, but also found a coincidence in tastes, inclinations, temperaments. The main passion of both was art. At first, the Goncourt brothers dabbled in painting - not just training the ability to hold a brush in hand, but also deeply studying everything that related to this art form. His passion for painting echoed another passion - collecting works of art and various rare curiosities.
In their own works, the Goncourts used the impressionist style - the focus was not on the thoughts of the characters, but on the transfer of sensations. They laid the foundations of naturalism - one of the varieties of realism, when facts are portrayed impassively, as in the conduct of scientific experience. The Goncourts themselves called their literary style "clinical writing" - one that reveals the hidden sides of the inner life of a person. Edmond and Jules completely belonged to literature. Even the diary of the brothers, which they kept together, is a literary work full of continuous subtle observations, historical material for subsequent generations. Edmond survived his brother by twenty-six years, according to his will, the "Society of the Goncourt Brothers" was created, and in 1903 the first presentation of the Goncourt Prize took place.
3. The Lumiere brothers, Auguste and Louis
Auguste and Louis Lumiere are the founders of cinema. As is often the case in successful and long-term creative unions, one of the brothers was directly involved in inventions and the technical side of the matter, the other took on the role of organizer and manager. The famous apparatus called "Cinematograph" was invented and created by Louis. The desire to design and create something previously unseen did not arise out of the blue, the brothers worked together with their father - Antoine Lumiere, engaged in the production of photographic plates. My father was an artist and was fond of a new and fashionable type of fine art for that time - photography.
By the time Cinematograph appeared, there were already similar inventions, for example, Edison's kinetoscope, which, however, was intended for individual viewing. The Lumière brothers relied on inventions that already existed in this field. The first public show took place on March 22, 1895, and nine months later, on December 28, the famous film screening took place in a cafe on Boulevard des Capucines. This date is considered the birthday of the cinema.
The Lumière brothers have shot several dozen films, each of which is no more than one minute long. Louis Lumière did not stop at the creation of the cinematograph, having patented a method of obtaining color photography in 1903.
4. Brothers Wright, Wilber and Orville
The Wright brothers, according to the most widespread opinion, belonged to the primacy in the creation of an aircraft heavier than air, controlled by man. And the flights were made by the inventors themselves. Wilber was born in 1867, Orville four years later. In addition to them, the family had five more children. Father, a priest, once gave Wilber and Orville a toy "helicopter" - a device made of paper and bamboo that could fly. The brothers really liked the toy, they were engaged in it until they broke it, and after breaking it, they set themselves the goal of making a new one and did it.
Orville interrupted his studies at school quite early, but Wilber was planning to go to university, but the case prevented. In his youth, the eldest of the Wright brothers was injured, as a result of which he lost his front teeth, and therefore closed himself, refused to travel to the university and began to work with Orvil. At first it was a publishing business, and the brothers even invented the print press, but then the Wrights took up what became fashionable and gaining momentum - selling and repairing bicycles. Over time, Orville and Wilber began their production, but the dream of flying, which had appeared in childhood thanks to a gift from their father, did not leave the brothers. In their workshop, they set up experiments that were supposed to lead to human flights in a controlled aircraft, and in the end they managed to do this.
5. Brothers Strugatsky, Arkady and Boris
The elder brother, Arkady, began his literary career even before the war. The upbringing and the values laid down by the family only contributed to this hobby: his father, Natan Zalmanovich, was the editor of a newspaper, and in Leningrad, where the family moved from Batumi, he was a researcher at the Russian Museum, his mother, Alexandra Litvincheva, was a teacher of the Russian language and literature.
In the winter of 1942, father and eldest son attempted to get out of besieged Leningrad along the "road of life", where mother and little Boris remained. Nathan Strugatsky died after suffering severe hypothermia. Arkady managed to take his brother and mother out of the city in 1943. In the early fifties, Boris also took up literary work. Writing was a hobby for both, they discussed their ideas a lot, and in 1958 they published their first joint work - a story, later reworked into a story, called "From the outside", it was published in the journal "Technics - Youth". The first book of the Strugatskys - "The Land of Crimson Clouds" - was published in 1959.
We worked, creating on the pages of the works "The World of Midday" - such a reality in which they themselves would like to live. The first stories and stories were utopias, but later the Strugatskys changed their style, more and more satire appeared in their books. Many works were not published at all until the early nineties and even the two thousandth, and often the brothers deliberately went to work "on the table", as in the case of the philosophical novel "The Doomed City". Arkady Strugatsky died in 1991; Boris survived his brother by twenty-one years. Among the many works of the Strugatskys, there are several that were written by the brothers separately - most often under pseudonyms. Arkady signed himself as “S. Yaroslavtsev ", Boris - as" S. Vititsky ".
The Strugatsky brothers are among those celebrities whose graves their fans will never be able to visit.
