National Geographic has named a character who will be the hero of the third season of "Genius". This time, the audience will see the English writer Mary Shelley, who once created the legends about Frankenstein.
Each season of the documentary series is dedicated to an outstanding person who left a significant mark on history. A season has already been released on the screens with a story about the life of a theoretical physicist, author of the theory of relativity, Albert Einstein. On April 24, the first episode of the second season will debut, which is dedicated to Pablo Picasso, played by Antonio Banderas.
National Geographic said that Mary Shelley was chosen as the heroine of the third season of "Genius" because her work greatly influenced all the literary works of the twentieth century. Not a small factor in choosing in favor of Mary was her unusual lifestyle for that time. A woman always lived by her own rules, which then required great courage. However, there is still no information on which actress will play the main character.
Her book "Frankenstein, or Modern Prometheus" was published in 1818. The work tells the story of Dr. Frankenstein, who with his own hands created a monster from the remains of dead people, and then revived it. Now there are many adherents of the version that the book is the first novel written in a science fiction genre, because to create that very "monster" the hero had to resort to scientific methods.
The writer made the first draft of her future book two years before its official release, while vacationing in Switzerland on a lake with George Byron. In her memoirs, Mary told how she came up with such an idea for the book: “I saw a pale scientist, a follower of occult sciences, bending over a creature that he was putting together. I saw a disgusting phantom in human form, and then, after turning on some powerful engine, signs of life appeared in it, its movements were constrained and devoid of strength. It was a terrifying sight."
The woman took the title for the book from the German castle, in which the alchemist Johann Konrad worked in the 17th century, which became the main prototype in her novel. Based on the book by Mary Shelley, a lot of different films in the fantasy genre were filmed, but the most iconic is the 1931 film adaptation, where the role of the monster was played by Boris Karloff.
