2020 surprised everyone with events that seem more like another Hollywood fiction. This is the time of the great pandemic. The global media urges people to stay at home and keep their distance in public places. Theaters, cinemas, gyms and museums are closing. Hospitals around the world are filled with patients. The most popular attribute is the mask. Time seems to have stood still during the 21st century coronavirus. But not for an artist from Iran.
About the artist
Cartoonist Alireza Pakdel decided to show his viewers how to adapt to these difficult and extreme times. He created a new series of illustrations to heal the mental wounds caused by the coronavirus epidemic.
As long as people around the world stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, health professionals continue to work on the front lines to serve the community. The social, political and cultural work of cartoonists helps viewers to form strong, sustainable relationships with society, as artists are born from within society and are familiar with the current situation in the country. At the same time, artists can remind society of the necessary rules through their art through criticism, enlightenment and clarification.
Alireza Pakdel established himself as an active Iranian cartoonist. His new collection has been highly acclaimed in Iranian and international social media. This is because it reflects the harsh reality of doctors during the fight against coronavirus. The Iranian master depicts brave doctors and nurses fighting the virus in both realistic and creative scenarios. He decided to create works of art that give hope and good feelings to people in the current situation that people are facing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The world is grappling with fears of COVID-19, and the loss and damage is almost the same around the world. I wanted to create works to instill hope in the community and to express gratitude to the medical staff, as well as to help reduce the fear and anxiety that gripped society,”Pakdel said in one of his interviews.
Illustrations
Pakdell's results were very well received by the public. “I received a lot of kind messages from the audience, which gave me more energy and motivation to continue my creativity,” he concluded.
In his work, you can see the repetitive images of giant green microbes that reflect the fear in society of an invisible enemy. The contrast depicts the medical staff as real heroes and angels relentlessly holding back the threat.
PJ Masks save people from the virus in a variety of metaphorical scenes in which COVID-19 is the real enemy. For example, Pakdel portrays illness as handcuffs that doctors must disassemble, as well as a maze that medics must go through, and even as a huge bear trap that threatens a car. This type of ever-changing enemy symbolizes the catastrophic problem that the artist poses to doctors on the front lines.
In addition, Pakdel stresses the importance of solidarity, responsibility and love for each other in this time of crisis. Just as doctors are working to tackle the problems associated with the coronavirus, citizens don’t stand aside by wearing masks and observing recommended precautions.
His minimalist drawings highlight the courage and dedication of healthcare professionals. Pakdel's illustrations also reflect the surreal state of the world during the crisis.
The doctors portrayed as soldiers on the front lines, as well as more intimate depictions of them missing their families or caring for the sick, are tributes to Iranian artist Alireza Pakdel's medics.
Alireza Pakdel depicts the fight against coronavirus not only of medical personnel, but also of the fight against the pandemic on behalf of other professions (firefighters, janitors, etc.). During this challenging time, every social work has become significant in the battle against the spread of the virus.
Each illustration by Alireza Pakdel conveys incredible deep emotions of respect and compassion for people who are trying to help society at the risk of their health and the health of their families - these are doctors. Now is a difficult period for humanity, which society can overcome only by supporting and listening to the instructions of medical personnel. Pakdel masterfully highlighted the power of solidarity. Illustrations create an even more incredible sense of being inspired by reality.
