Video: From "Clash" to "Avatar" and "Star Wars": 5 films around which the controversy continues today

It often happens that the opinion of experienced critics differs from the way the audience perceives the film. And, it would seem, there is nothing special about this, if the most real incidents did not happen, when films glorified by critics and received high awards, in fact, do not represent anything of themselves, and today they even have record low ratings and a lot of negative reviews. What kind of pictures were hated by the audience and how did they really deserve it?
1. Collision
This picture is another one that won an Oscar, becoming the best film according to the Academy. However, he was unanimously recognized as one of the worst that ever received this award. Clash was about racial relationships in the United States, and was full of typical plot twists in the form of the white savior of the black nation, ridiculous depictions of how whites and blacks actually work, and so on. This movie is a melodrama, and it reduces all racial issues to little things that can be solved in absolutely wacky and even funny ways.
However, this is probably the opinion that was prevalent in society at the time of the film's release (in 2005), because on Rotten Tomatoes it received 78% positive reviews, as well as an excellent score on CinemaScore. American film critic Robert Elbert came out then and said that this film was voted the best of the year by a small margin. However, Jack Nicholson, who then announced this nomination by reading the inscription on the card, was really shocked by this choice of the Academy. When the title of this picture was announced, many dissatisfied comments and even unflattering responses were heard from the audience. Probably, those dissatisfied with this film were not enough to remove it from the Oscar nomination, but this was enough for it to acquire general dislike.
2. Avatar
This film held the bar for quite a long time and was the highest grossing in the history of cinema exactly until this year. It had stunning visuals, told an interesting and engaging story, but many would agree that the film did not appeal to them either then or today. For the most part, when something bright and interesting hits the screen, the story itself seems to be drowned out by the scale of what is happening. Avatar is considered a truly phenomenal film. On the way to this title, he earned over $ 2 billion, breaking the box office record for the movie "Titanic", which was about 2.8 billion green. The film also had a resounding success at the Academy Awards that year, earning statuettes for cinematography, directing, visual effects, and more.
However, just like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Avatar is more of a spectacular picture built on visual effects than a great film that uses modern technology. Today it takes more than a picture to win the love of critics and audiences alike. The film is currently undergoing negative reviews for its lack of originality, a banal plot, and a story of a savior that repeats itself over and over again. Nevertheless, when the second part of the film was announced, which is about to be released, many really formed, given that more than ten years had passed since the release of Avatar.
3. Star Wars. Episode I: The Phantom Menace
There are tons of people out there who really hate prequels. However, the hatred for this part of "Star Wars" was so strong that the actor who played the young Anakin was forced to give up acting, as both viewers and critics mercilessly intimidated the child after the release of the picture. Many people point out that The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are considered the worst of all the parts in this saga (with the exception of the modern ones, of course). There were so many rumors around the prequel, there were a lot of expectations and excitement, and therefore, since tickets were not yet sold online, people literally lined up in front of the box office in cinemas, hoping to get a ticket for the premiere.
However, the film itself was not perceived as a masterpiece or something truly new. The official statements of critics were more limited to some kind of nostalgia for "Star Wars", condescending comments, which led to a huge number of reviews. Who, however, tried to focus exclusively on the merits of this picture. This resulted in the film receiving an A rating on CinemaScore, with film critic Roger Ebert calling it "an amazing creative achievement in cinema." However, in 1999, progress did not yet allow shooting really spectacular and vivid films, and therefore criticism focused mainly on the storyline and its holes, as well as on some very meager acting. It is enough just to look at the modern reviews about this film to understand that the prequels are clearly not the kind of story that the audience loves and appreciates, and that if this film came out this year, it would not have been as neutral as it was then.
4. Full raskolbas
This cartoon for adults has a very specific humor that not many will appreciate. And it was this that became the reason for the critical reviews, which rained down in a flurry from critics and spectators, who literally hate him with every fiber of their soul. Some critics argue that this cartoon is unique in its essence, raises completely new questions in the world of animation, while others even argue that its finale is a true masterpiece and something that everyone should see. However, when the hype died down around him, after years it could be discovered that this is a very controversial cartoon. So, Rotten Tomatoes rated it at 83%, which absolutely does not correspond to the opinion that the viewers had about this picture. While many agreed that it was a unique experiment with an interesting presentation style, viewers still claim that it was completely uninteresting and even repulsive.
Another reason the cartoon is literally hated is that many of the animators who worked on it were literally the worst working conditions imaginable. They also complained that they were not paid extra for overtime work, because of which they ended up on the cinema blacklist and raised a real riot among the audience, which was resolved just recently.
5. American Scam
This movie is perhaps the strangest of all on our list. And he could take an honorable first place in the ranking of the most overrated paintings. So, on Rotten Tomatoes, he has a whopping 92% positive reviews, Metacritics gave him 90 points, and he was nominated for an Oscar for all the leading roles and, of course, for Best Picture. However, this is precisely what is very interesting. The film received almost no awards at the Oscars, except for the Golden Globe, while earning a very negative stigma. After all, the audience had a lot of questions about the fact that at the Oscars they had forgotten the film, which won nothing, and how it received so many nominations, if in fact it was worth nothing.
A sharp flurry of criticism continues to this day, thereby bringing down all possible ratings for this film. Many viewers argue that it is unreasonably long, others talk about the impossibly intricate plot of its plot, and still others brand it as the sloppiest and wackiest film in history. And despite the full deservedness of such reviews, it causes mixed feelings, because in fact the history of the film, which is at the heart of it, could become a truly masterpiece.
Continuing the theme - and a myriad of other awards.
