The authorities have once again taken up the books under the pretext that the proposed restrictions are not censorship at all, but "understanding the situation" that has developed in our time. Another initiative was taken by the Department of Culture of the city of Moscow. The initiator of the proposal to reduce the lists of literature purchased in the library, the head of the said department, shed light on the situation. According to him, citizens need to develop "the correct literary taste."
By dubious literature, officials mean books about love outside of marriage, drugs, suicide, and more. Representatives of some libraries complained that without such books they would stop going to libraries at all, to which the Department of Culture said that one person would be enough, but let him come to read Dostoevsky.
In general, there is nothing surprising in the department's desire to fight low-grade literature - no. However, the works of many foreign classics of the XX and XIX centuries may be included in the list of prohibited books (prohibited for purchase by the capital's libraries).
Tatyana Krasnova, head of the department for cultural and youth policy in the Southern Administrative District, criticized, for example, books such as "Naked Breakfast" by William Burroughs and the children's book "Pretending to be Dead" by Stefan Casta. In addition, all officials express concern about the growing interest in literature on the Third Reich.
As special cases, officials called dissatisfaction with the purchase of historical literature. For example, indignation was caused by the fact that more than 100 copies of books about Napoleon were bought, and only 20 books about Kutuzov. This, in the opinion of those in power, has a negative effect on “patriotic education”.
