They were called the most beautiful couple in the Maly Theater, where they both came straight from the student's bench. True, they studied at different theatrical universities, and their acquaintance could turn out to be a fleeting resort romance. Fortunately, the actor was completely different from his on-screen character from the movie "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears." Despite the difficulties and emerging problems, Yuri Vasiliev and Nelly Kornienko could not even imagine that they could disperse.
Romance of the Black Sea
They were young and carefree. Yuri Vasiliev studied at GITIS and came to Gelendzhik with his parents. Nelly was a student at the Shchepkinsky School and ended up at sea with her mother and friend. Nellie immediately drew attention to the tall, stately handsome man, but she did not dare to get to know him. Fortunately, a more lively friend found a suitable excuse to meet and soon introduced Nelly to Yuri Vasiliev.
They spent 24 hours together, parting only for a short nap. They were happy, made some plans, were glad that they lived in the same city. They left Gelendzhik separately, but they were sure that they would meet again in Moscow.
In the capital, they had much less time for communication, but both rushed to each date, as if they were the first. And then a real miracle happened in their life: Yuri Vasiliev and Nelly Kornienko were invited to the main roles in the film "Catchers of Sponges". In fact, the young actors did not even have to pretend to be in love, their romance was in full swing, and their eyes simply shone with happiness.
Early marriage
They were barely 20 years old when the young actors decided to become husband and wife. Yuri Vasiliev and Nelly Kornienko simply could not imagine life without each other. They had nothing but their great love. But the difficulties of the newlyweds did not frighten: both believed that they could overcome everything if they were together. At first they lived with Vasiliev's parents, who tried to help the children in everything.
They practically did not part: both served at the Maly Theater, came to work together, left together. They helped each other learn roles, consulted on how best to convey the character of this or that character. They missed parting a little, there was some satiety with constant closeness. But they also learned to cope with this problem.
Fortunately, their characters almost perfectly matched, so there was no irritation with everyday problems or habits of the second half. Mixed into their relationship and the share of acting competition. Either Nelly Kornienko will be on the crest of success, then Yuri Vasiliev will suddenly become famous. Fame came to him after filming in the film by Sergei Gerasimov "Journalist", she also received the title of People's Artist much earlier than her husband.
Each had periods of inactivity in the cinema, but there was always a beloved Maly Theater, where both were closely involved in performances.
The actors for a long time could not cope with jealousy, although they suffered from it very much. When she first watched "Journalist", where there were love scenes between Yuri Vasiliev and Galina Polskikh, her friends offered Nelly a valerian. However, my husband also had reasons for jealousy. In the play "Cyrano de Bergerac" the actress played with Yuri Solomin. And even the audience was sure that she was having an affair with the performer of the role of Cyrano. At the same time, Christian was played by the husband of the actress.
Together in grief and joy
In 1967, Yuri Vasiliev and Nelly Kornienko became parents: their only daughter, Ekaterina, was born. And soon they got a separate apartment and were incredibly happy.
Yuri Vasiliev was very gentle in life, and he simply enveloped his daughter with his love and care. For all his intelligence and sophistication, the actor loved to do something with his own hands. His main creation was a house in the village, which he built for his family entirely on his own. As soon as he had a free minute, he went to the village, put on a quilted jacket, kneaded the mortar, laid the foundation, erected the walls.
The wife believes that the actor's only drawback was smoking. Yuri Vasiliev sometimes smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. But the actor coped with the addiction to alcohol even without outside help. He just didn't want to lose his job at the theater.
Nelly Kornienko has repeatedly said in an interview that her husband was a very consistent person, he brought any business to the end. And on all tours and on vacation, he always took with him a uniform and a racket for playing tennis, which he was fond of for many years.
When time doesn't heal
In 1999, Yuri Vasiliev finally received the title of People's Artist. And in June of the same year he was gone. For a long time, the actor did not pay attention to heart pains, did not go to doctors, only periodically put a pill of validol under his tongue.
On June 4, it was unusually hot in Moscow, and Yuri Vasiliev urgently needed to undergo a technical inspection of his "Niva", on which the spouses were to go to the village the next morning. He was worried, very tired and overheated in the sun, and therefore did not even begin to eat, immediately lay down on the sofa to rest. He never got up again. When his wife entered the room, Yuri Vasiliev was no longer breathing, his heart stopped.
Nelly Kornienko survived her husband by 20 years, in recent years she suffered from Parkinson's disease, while being in her right mind. She endlessly yearned for a loved one and talked about how time does not heal. On May 9, 2019, the actress passed away.
In the filmography of Yuri Vasiliev there are about 30 roles, but most of them are supporting roles. The audience remembered him in the image of Rodion Rachkov from the film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" and was often identified with him, while in real life he was the complete opposite of his hero. Perhaps because of this, he was never able to fully realize his creative potential.
