Former naval pilot and now photographer Sergei Larenkov creates stunning collages, combining photographs of cities during the Second World War with their modern photographs taken from the same angles. Most of Sergei's works are devoted to the blockade of Leningrad, but his collection also contains photographs of Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Paris.

About ten years ago, the 41-year-old photographer began collecting old postcards with views of St. Petersburg. Once he tried to combine black and white images of the city with modern photographs and, to his surprise, found that the result was more than unexpected. According to Sergei, working with archival images, he seems to be creating a time portal between the past and the present.

At first, the photographer treated this project simply as a hobby. However, gradually immersing himself in the idea he himself had invented, Sergei was fond of it more and more.

“The most important thing in this job is to find the right angle for your photography. Finding the point where the photographer once stood proved to be difficult, but very exciting. Imagine that you have just looked at the modern world with your own eyes, when suddenly you are transported into the past, seeing the picture as it was before the eyes of your predecessor. It is almost the same as if you entered a time machine. Sometimes it gets scary …”- Sergey Larenkov shares his impressions.

Contemporary artists see and talk about the Second World War in different ways. So American Mark Hogankamp even recreates paintings of that war with the help of dolls.
