Peter is famous for drawbridges and, looking at how giant structures rise, letting ships pass, it is hard to believe that you can think of an even more original way to "reconcile" pedestrians and sailors. However, the English architects succeeded, they created the world's first tilt bridge, called Millennium bridge.
The British are very fond of this masterpiece of modern architecture, its unofficial title is "Blinking Eye Bridge". The unusual design really resembles the rising and falling eyelid of a huge eye. The bridge looks original, and when it turns, it attracts thousands of spectators. This, by the way, happens about two hundred times a year.
The idea of creating such an unusual bridge was born in 1996. Then the city council of Gateshead held a competition in which the joint project of architects Eyre and Wilkinson won. It took two years to bring this ingenious idea to life; the bridge was put into operation in 2001. The result was striking: the dimensions of the constructed bridge matched the plan with an accuracy of several millimeters. The construction of this grandiose structure took $ 44 million.
In the “calm” state, one support of the bridge is lifted vertically upwards by 50 m, and the other is lowered, and a lively stream of pedestrians and cyclists moves along it. In this case, small vessels can pass under the bridge, however, in the case when it is required to pass large-sized vehicles, both supports rotate in such a way that the upper one is lowered, and the lower one, accordingly, is raised. Being in the equilibrium-raised position, the arches form a gap of 25 m. Amazingly, the lifting of the structure occurs instantly - it takes 4.5 s!
The bridge has another highlight: it consists of two decks, separated from each other. Cyclists ride on one, and pedestrians walk on the other. The pedestrian area is equipped with seating for those who want to admire the beauty of the Tyne River for a longer time.
By the way, on the site Kulturologiya. Ru we have already told our readers about another architectural miracle: a transforming bridge in Holland is another variation on the theme of traditional drawbridges.

How Utyosov made Stalin cry and why he burned the first copies of his first book
Leonid Osipovich Utyosov became a legend during his lifetime. He was the first in many ways. He was the first to perform works by Babel, Bagritsky and Zoshchenko, created his own "Tea Jazz", which after only five years received the status of the State, was the first to bring musicians from the orchestra pit to the stage, and the first pop artist to receive the title of People's. And Leonid Utyosov was always a very honest person. He never hid the fact that during the years of repression he was desperately afraid of Stalin, especially after
Where did the first Russian snipers come from, and why did the enemy drummers get the first bullet?
It is impossible to establish the exact time period for the appearance of snipers. The closest thing to the truth is the statement that the jaeger military units stood at the origins of the sniper craft. During the rule of linear tactics, these units were formed by the most well-aimed marksmen, who operated in loose combat. The first jaeger battalion in the army ranks appeared in Russia in 1764. And although the gamekeepers are considered the predecessors of modern snipers, there was a significant difference between them
The very first skyscraper and the first experience of the Stalinist Empire style in Vladivostok: What is the famous "Gray Horse"
This luxurious house, built in the Stalinist Empire style so unusual for Vladivostok, is at the same time unique, mysterious, monumental, and simply delightful. Unfortunately, not all of us have the opportunity to visit distant Vladivostok, so the house bearing the strange name "The Gray Horse" is not as widely known as, for example, the architectural masterpieces of Moscow or St. Petersburg. But if you are in the Primorsky Territory, be sure to look at it - it's worth it

How did the first coins appear, what came before them, and who printed the first bills
Money is a fairly ancient means of calculating. But market relations emerged much earlier. For centuries, ancient people made purchases, exchanged goods without the use of coins, banknotes and IOUs.
