A gloomy, mysterious city, in the deserted back streets of which you can easily find characters like Jack the Ripper: this is how London appears in unique photographs John morrison and Harold burdekin … The only edition of their book "London Night" dates back to 1934.
Bloggers from the online community The Library Time Machine only recently published unique photographs of Morrison and Bardkin for the first time. The dim light of street lamps falls on London streets almost a century ago; not a single living creature can be found here - except perhaps the dog, which is depicted on the sign of the pub "The Blue Dog" ("Sad Dog").
Photos from the book "London Night" are a unique cast of time: here we see pre-war London, like an endless maze. Looking at these works is like going on a journey without beginning or end through a gothic nightmare. From around the corner, either Count Dracula, or some bloody ghost of the Victorian era is about to look out.
We have published materials about contemporary artists representing today's view of the British capital: among them we can name Gavin Hemmond and Karl Warner … Comparing Hemmond's work with Morrison-Bardkin's photographs, one can understand what kind of evolution the city has gone through over the past hundred years.
