And all because this already middle-aged photographer has a rare gift to treat everything with a sense of humor. He became famous for a series of black and white photographs made in an ironic manner. These are ordinary life situations, but when Erwitt appears next to him, he will definitely see something funny in what is happening, and will have time to photograph it. Even an ordinary cow in his photographs somehow very thoughtfully examines its shadow, and the halo of the monument begins to look more like a television antenna. Elliott's childhood cannot be called ordinary: his parents emigrated from Russia to France (Paris), where he was born, the first ten years of his life were spent in Italy, and in the late 1930s America became the home of the future photographer. Erwitt studied photography and film in Los Angeles and New York, although he believes that education is far from the most important thing: “Taking pictures is very simple. There is no great secret in photography. Photography schools are a waste of time. It takes practice, a practical application of your knowledge. I am convinced that if you succeed, the only important thing is to keep working. It doesn't matter if you get paid for it."
Elliott began his career as an assistant photographer for American military units in Europe, but even there he managed to treat everything with irony and show it in his photographs. After his return, he was a freelance photographer for popular magazines for a while, and then signed an agreement with an agency "Magnum Photos", which has allowed him to engage in free photo projects for 50 years and travel around the world. Elliott Erwitt no two pictures are alike, each of them is individual and tells us its own little story. The only common feature of his work is emotionality. The author simply does not take other photographs: “I want the images to be emotional. I am not very interested in any other pictures."
During his life, the photographer was lucky to see and photograph many famous people such as Richard Nixon, Nikita Sergeevich Khrushchev, Marilyn Monroe, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
