The photographs by French photographer Laurent Bajo are easy to recognize - they are stylish black and white shots in which wild animals appear as real superheroes and kings. It is the grandeur and grace that distinguishes the heroes of Baho's pictures, although he himself admits that he is fascinated by absolutely everything that concerns wildlife - whether it is danger or fragility in the gaze of lions, or the desire of animals to live their usual routine life.
“Even with a single lion, you can spend several hours and still won't have the same photos. Any lion offers an endless number of opportunities to capture his fleeting emotions - strength, fragility, love, tenderness - and all this makes me incredibly happy as a photographer."
Laurent Baheux has spent more than 17 years traveling in Africa. He always set the wildlife as the goal of his odyssey, and therefore he always traveled to those countries where you can see unique animals in their natural environment - Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. He photographed a variety of animals, but his favorite subjects have always been lions. So when it came to his own first book, which he published in 2009, it was of course all about lions.
Exactly 10 years have passed since the publication of that book (it was called "The Land of the Lions"), and this year Laurent again decided to publish his book - already the 14th in his portfolio - and also devote it to his beloved animals. It is simply called "Lions" and contains 115 gorgeous black and white photographs.
Laurent Bajo always works alone, without an assistant. He can sit in ambush for hours with his huge telephoto lens and watch the animals that are several tens of meters away. As Laurent himself admits, he himself never approaches animals, even if we are not talking about dangerous predators, but about much more peaceful animals. It is very important for the photographer not to disturb the peaceful life of the animals with his presence, not to disturb them, so he patiently waits for the animals to approach him themselves.
“I do not seek closeness of attention and do not interfere with the everyday life of the lions I photograph. I have a large lens that allows me to achieve photographic proximity without physically approaching animals. And so I can witness their personal relationship without disturbing their peace of mind."
Laurent Bajo is opposed to any imprisonment of animals in captivity. “No cages, no enclosures. We don't need circuses and zoos. Only freedom, only wild life. Any bondage for all living creatures is physical and psychological violence. Animals in this regard are exactly the same as people."
Among all 115 photographs that were included in the book "Lions" by Laurent Bajo, the photographer himself most of all loves a portrait of a lion, pensively looking into the distance. “There is both strength and tenderness in this photograph. For me, this is just the embodiment of what lions are - majestic animals with natural grace and quiet disposition."
