It is believed that two different people cannot come up with one brilliant idea. But there is another opinion: geniuses think the same way. This is probably why the Italian sculptor Mattia Trotta and his Korean colleague Yeong-Deok Seo create sculptures from such an unusual material as chains. True, unlike Matia Trott, Yong Dok So uses bicycle chains for sculptures. Rough metal in skillful hands turns into very original sculpture-installations in the form of human figures without a face and faces separate from the body. Bicycle chains twist and fold intricately, so that the work of the Korean author looks like sculptures made of metal bars, tightly welded together.
Many people wonder why Yong Dok So's sculptures look so dull and unhealthy. And the fact is that these figures of people, created from bicycle chains, are metaphors of human existence, and reflect life, movement, illness, suffering, and other states inherent in people.
Despite the fact that the sculptures of this author evoke rather mixed feelings upon contemplation, his exhibitions are always successful both in his native Seoul and beyond. More sculptures created from bicycle and industrial chains can be seen on the Yeong-Deok Seo website.
