Unusual, slightly strange porcelain sculptures made by the artist Beth Katleman, called "the theater of murder and internal chaos." It is only at first glance that they seem cute, homely and so dear, made in the style of timeless retro. If you take a closer look, you can easily catch those small, but rather important details that the artist decided to hide deeper, leaving the "dessert" only for the most curious. All of these porcelain sculptures are part of one large-scale installation called Folly, which the author herself calls three-dimensional porcelain wallpaper. Folly in translation means "stupidity", the sculptures are not at all retro, but kitsch, and the nuances hidden from prying eyes are not secrets, but small "shkodinkas", tricks of the artist, who for some reason decided to have fun with a serious project by adding a share of humor, and sometimes black.
So, if you look closely at the photographs of the installation details, one of them shows two women drowning a newborn baby in a pond. On the other - an imitation of a statue of a peeing boy, who painfully resembles a children's rubber toy "Stepka", with a bare bottom and a sly physiognomy supporting trousers falling to his knees. There is nothing to say about outlandish mushrooms, grinning snails, a pooping kid and a duck hanging from a sculpture, tied by a tail with a thin wire.
Therefore, the name Folly fits perfectly with this strange but interesting installation, which you want to look at over and over again, trying to find new "shkodinki" left by Bet Cattleman. To get acquainted with the work of the artist, you can visit her solo exhibitions, which are often held in American museums, galleries and private exhibition halls, or by looking at her personal website.
