Usually equestrian statues are erected in honor of the great commanders of bygone times, who won many victories on the battlefields, the real heroes who made history. But in London there was a very unusual equestrian monumentdepicting … a child on a toy horse.
Moreover, this equestrian statue stands not just anywhere, but in the very center of the city, on Trafalgar Square. She occupied the famous Fourth Pedestal, which now displays works of contemporary art. It was built back in 1841, and it was planned that it will be occupied by a monument to the English king William the Fourth. However, these plans were not destined to come true. For decades, the pedestal was empty, until a few years ago it was decided to install the works of living authors on it.
Within the framework of this program, the sculpture Powerless Structures, Fig. 101 (Powerless Structures. Figure 101) by the creative duo of Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset.
This sculpture, in the best traditions of the genre, depicts a man on a horse. But this is not a great commander or a monarch of the past on his powerful stallion, but a child on a toy rocking horse. According to the duo Elmgreen and Dragset, he is the hero of our time, deserving a bronze monument in the center of London.
The essence of this message lies in the desire of Scandinavian artists to show the ever-increasing power of each person. After all, if before the history was made by the generals and monarchs, now anyone can become a hero, and the concept of "little man" is fading into oblivion, becoming an anachronism.
Opening of the Equestrian Statue Powerless Structures, Fig. 101 happened on February 23 this year. It will stand on the Fourth Pedestal for about a year, and in 2013 it will be replaced by the sculpture Hahn / Cock by the German artist Katharina Fritsch.
