Video: Give me some cards in hand An overview of the stunning constructions of playing cards
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
Constructions made of playing cards are so fragile and unreliable that the catch phrase "crumbled like a house of cards" has long been used when it is necessary to point out the fragility of any ideas, hopes and expectations. However, each of us, at least once in his life, tried to build a turret or two out of kings, ladies and jackets. I bet such turrets broke down without standing even for a few seconds, but there are craftsmen in the world who can rein in rebellious cards and create something special, amazing, delightful - and durable out of them. Read more in our small review.
Sculptures by Brian Berg
No glue, no tape, no paper clips - only by choosing the ideal position and determining the center of gravity "card sculptor" Brian Berg (Brian Berg) builds his stunning sculptures. It's just some kind of magic, not otherwise! But he makes the cards obey him, do not move and do not fall, and thus erects skyscrapers, palaces, fortresses and even a miniature Olympic village.
House of Cards from Leeds University
Alas, it was not possible to find out who exactly the author of the amazing balancing house of playing cards that appeared at Leeds University during the Fine Art Degree Show in 2006. But it is clear that the cards had a hard time - in order to build this whole structure and not let it fall apart, the craftsmen cut the edges of their paper "bricks" and thus fastened them together.
Flying alligator from Shanghai
It is difficult to say, looking at the photographs, exactly how the Shanghai craftsmen made this beast, how many hundreds of decks they took to "build" it, and how, in fact, the cards are fastened together. One thing is clear: in order to build a flying alligator, the team of creators needed to gather all their Chinese perseverance into a fist and stock up on remarkable patience - this is such a delicate and painstaking work.
Lisa Curtis card art
And this work, although not a sculpture, but an installation, or, as the author calls it, Lisa Curtis, a card collage, also deserves close attention. For this collage, the girl had to "spoil" several dozen decks, carefully bending corners and arranging the resulting compositions according to colors and sizes. It turned out, perhaps, not as large-scale as with previous authors, but also quite interesting.

Playing cards with Maya Indians, drawn by Viktor Sveshnikov: How and why they appeared in the USSR
After Spain conquered America and the powerful Mayan empire finally disappeared, the native language of the Indians was lost, and the researchers had to be content with only incomprehensible ancient texts. However, it was possible to guess the Mayan code. In honor of this event, unusual playing cards appeared in the USSR, dedicated to the mythology and writing of this ancient and mysterious empire. What connected Soviet citizens with American Indians?

From the history of playing cards: How "pictures" came to Russia, and who was depicted on them at different times
Many people like “to be thrown into the game of cards”. Perhaps, everyone at least once in his life played "a fool", "a goat" or "a drunkard." And the most advanced ones fight in poker or “paint a bullet”. The fair sex often throws solitaire games or guessing in order to look into the future or get an answer to a tormenting question. And far fewer people know about the history of the cards and the original meaning of the images on them
Who from the imperial family was hiding behind drawings on a popular deck of playing cards
Check which deck of cards you have in your drawer at home. It is quite possible that this one! Probably, each of us has seen such a deck of cards ("Russian style") - in the days of the USSR, these cards were one of the most common. At first glance, there is nothing unusual in them - we are so accustomed to these drawings that we probably did not even pay attention to the clothes of the card heroes. This is where the strangeness lies: the prototypes for kings and queens in this deck were not proletarians and collective farmers, but participants after
