Artist of Lithuanian origin, Alex Kanevsky. His work and he himself are little known to a wide audience, however, it would be unfair to call him an unrecognized master. Alex Kanevsky attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Philadelphia, PA, exhibiting since 1987.
In one of his few interviews, Kanevsky said that he set himself two tasks in painting for the future: to draw a really good portrait of Elvis Presley, and kittens. There are no technical complications here; the question is only in the first case - in overcoming the cult image, in the other - in aesthetic prejudices. These tasks could be easily solved, for example, in the provocative style of pop art. But Alex works in an impressionistic style.
Kanevsky's work is felt very personal, in the sense that the artist most often depicts a single individual. Almost always naked. In addition to the artistic "delicacy of nudity", on his canvases one can clearly feel a kind of aloof contemplation of a person "without veils." in fact, only by myself. No pathos or social manifesto, beauty lies in simplicity.
The artist's technique is excellent. The main tool is a palette knife and wide flute brushes. Confident "passes" with a palette knife create singularly unique color combinations. The use of translucent paint mixtures allows for an elegant glaze effect, when the lower layers of paint do not completely overlap with the upper ones, but show through them.
Definitely, Kanevsky has his own, already fully formed, artistic vision. The formulated style allows him to play and paraphrase long-known traditional plots.
Although the artist speaks of his caution in relation to photography, its undoubted influence is felt; Kanevsky now and then shows a purely photographic construction of the composition: the grass on his canvas is not seen alive. She is captured in a photograph taken using macro photography. On the artist's personal website there is an interesting section "Painting in progress", with the help of which the artist allows you to see how the work on the canvases is going.
