British sculptor Tony Cragg known for the fact that for his works he uses not heavy bronze, marble or stone, but light and simple materials that are always at hand - or underfoot. So, we have already written about his plastic installations once, and the sculptures, which will be discussed today, are also made of plastic, but in the form of dice. Tony Cragg began his career with such simple principles as "add, divide and fractions". On this principle, his first works are built, dating back to the 70s of the last century, when the author was still living in Liverpool. Then, already a resident of Düsseldorf, he built sculptures from such scrap materials as plastic children's cars, pieces of colored plastic found on the street - everything that cannot be equated with the so-called "heavy drama", as Tony Cragg calls monumental sculptures of other sculptors.
However, wood and marble still appeared in the work of the author, but much later. In addition to plastic toys and other light plastic junk, Tony Cragg worked with other household items, including furniture, constructing sculptures from it, and decorating the resulting structure with artificial leather and fabrics. Sculptures from dice are one of the latest creations of the master. Huge sculptures of black and white cubes Tony Cragg presented at the Paris exhibition FIAC 2011 literally last week.
How many cubes it took to create this dotted black and white splendor is hard to even imagine. In addition, the author claims that the series of sculptures made of dice is by no means finished. These and other works can be seen on Tony Cragg's website.
