Graduating from art university, Atsushi Takahashi did not harbor any illusions about his future career. One of the thousands of ordinary artists who paint ordinary paintings. And no one even thought that several years of work in a nursing home would radically change his outlook on life and serve as an impetus for a new direction in his work.

After graduating from the University of Tokyo in 2004, Atsushi Takahashi did not immediately start creating works of art. The first two years after graduation, he was looking for himself, not engaging in any specific activity. The next few years he spent as a nurse, caring for the elderly, and oddly enough, this prosaic occupation gave impetus to the development of the creative career of the Japanese artist. “I had little contact with other people, but I started listening to the stories of my charges and, willy-nilly, I became involved in their lives. I thought about many things and clearly understood that there were millions of people on Earth before me who died many years ago and whom I had never met. But nevertheless, their lives were connected with each other and partially overlapped. In an attempt to implement this idea, I came to my real style of painting,”says the artist.

The Japanese artist paints portraits of people he has ever met in his life. “Man is what interests me the most now,” says the author and draws people and their difficult fates with thousands of multi-colored squiggle lines.

The multiple intersecting lines that Atsushi Takahashi uses to paint portraits of his characters are not just dashes or the artist's desire to be original. Each line is someone's life, connected with the lives of other people who lived in different periods of time, and influenced the life of the person depicted in the portrait.
