Japanese photo artist Hiroshi Sugimoto loves taking pictures of nature, weather events and unusual landscapes. More precisely, he shoots ordinary landscapes, only from such an angle and in such a style that they become unusual. The sea is not like the sea, the city is like the city, and the thunders and lightnings are not real at all. So, recently the author presented at an exhibition in San Francisco a series of photographs of artificial lightning called " Lightning fields"Why lightning, you ask? The fact is that the photographer has a special relationship to these natural phenomena. He believes that he sees the spark of life itself at the moment when the lightning strikes. And he probably feels like a superhuman when he" causes " such phenomena with the help of a metal plate and a voltage of 400 thousand volts.
As a result of such machinations, photographs are born that look like paintings. All of them are ordered in the "Lightning Fields" series and are the subject of special pride for Hiroshi Sujimoto. By the way, he calls all his photographs "projects of time", demonstrating the conflict between life and death, as well as the transience of life and the transience of everything we have to deal with.
Hiroshi Sugimoto was born and raised in Tokyo, where he first studied politics and sociology, but then it dawned on him that he was wasting his time, and transferred to Los Angeles, where he became an artist and received a master's degree in art from a local Art Center College of Art and Design. Today the artist lives and works in New York.
