Making musical instruments can also be a real art, you just need to be creative in this process. Ben Simon, for example, makes guitars. They look like they came from the pages of children's books or comics, but they are absolutely functional.
Ben Simon says he studied woodworking techniques at a furniture maker in North Carolina. The author made his first guitar in 2006, and in 2007, when his musical group Get the People went to Europe, all the guitars in it were already made by Ben. Well, nowadays you won't surprise anyone with songs of your own composition, but if, at the same time, musical instruments are also made with your own hands, this is already something!
The first guitar, created by Ben Simon, was something of an experiment with different types of wood. At that time, the author made cutting boards of the most unusual shapes, and then - who would have thought - one of the boards became the basis for a musical instrument. Ben assures that his guitars are no different from those that can be bought in the store, but they look much more original and funnier.
Since Ben Simon has been working with wood for only five years, many of the subtleties are not yet known to him and he has to comprehend them in the process. In addition, he does not have all the necessary tools, and this also affects the speed of creating guitars. However, Ben assures that he has nowhere to rush, because quality has always been considered more important than quantity. On average, it takes about two months to create one instrument, although Ben admits that, depending on the design, he can make a guitar in three weeks.
Ben Simon currently lives in Brooklyn and is a member of the 3rd Ward design center. He can often be found on the New York subway, where Ben plays “Guitar2d2,” an instrument he invented himself. Basically, he plays author's melodies or improvises in front of an amazed audience.
